How to Throw Items & Objects in Spelunky 2

Just like in the first game, you’ll need to grab an object before you can throw it in Spelunky 2.

This is done by crouching down next to an item by pressing down on the D-Pad or Left Analogue Stick, and then pressing the Square Button. This will cause your character to pick up whatever object you were next to, and they’ll hang onto it until you decide where you want to throw it.

Speaking of which: You can throw any object you’re carrying by pressing the Square Button. This will launch it directly forward, or at an arc up or down if you’re holding up or down on the D-Pad and Analogue Stick respectively.

Lighter objects like small rocks or arrows will tend to fly farther, while heavier objects like pets and enemy corpses will hit harder upon impact. Keep this in mind so that you don’t end up lobbing a pet into a trap while trying to throw it to safety.

As for when you should pick up and throw objects in Spelunky 2, it depends on the situation.

If you need to disarm an Arrow Trap or stun an enemy blocking your path, throwing an object is the way to go. It can ensure you don’t lose any health, and take out any threats along your way to safety with minimal hassle. Likewise, if you’re trying to get a pet or ally to safety quickly, you can pick them up and throw them to solid ground, preventing them from having to deal with enemies, traps or whatever else.

However, if you’re in a cramped space, then throwing objects is highly inadvisable. Many objects can ricochet off walls, bouncing right back at you and dealing unneeded damage. This can be exacerbated if an enemy is nearby, with them either getting knocked into you or using the window of you getting hit to nail you with their attack.

Read each situation appropriately, and use your best judgement to ensure you get the most use out of the mechanic.
