Every Big 2020 Video Game Delay So Far

Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red’s upcoming first-person RPG looks set to be one of the biggest and most ambitious games of 2020. Set in Night City, a sprawling, futuristic metropolis where body modifications are commonplace and power is the key currency. As mercenary outlaw V, players will seek out a unique implant that grants immortality.

Alas, our quest for immortality will have to wait a bit longer. Despite being slated to initially release on April 16 this year, the game got delayed to Sept. 17 to give the development team the much-needed time to make sure the game was 100% finished.

Unfortunately, the development team couldn’t hit that deadline and Cyberpunk 2077 suffered another delay, now being pushed back to Nov. 19. Disappointing? Sure. But here’s hoping the game will surpass our expectations.

New Release Date: Nov. 19, 2020

Marvel’s Avengers

marvel's avengers, 2020 video game delays

Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel’s Avengers game allows players to team up and form their own group of superheroes as they take on missions and objectives together. They can earn more powerful gear and upgrades and interact with NPCs at the hub world. Imagine something like EA and BioWare’s Anthem but with Marvel’s cast of superheroes at the helm instead.

Following its first initial reveal at E3 last year, the reception was mixed. The game just didn’t look like it had the level of polish expected from a AAA title. Character models looked janky and gameplay generally seemed clunky.

Unsurprisingly, in January this year the news came that Marvel’s Avengers was being delayed to September in order to give the development team the time to “make the ultimate Avengers gaming experience.” Judging by its most recent showcasing, however, we’re still a little hesitant it’ll deliver on expectations.

New Release Date: Sept. 4, 2020

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition

I have to give myself a public pat on the back here for calling out that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition (what a mouthful) would get delayed this year less than 12 hours before Square Enix came out with the announcement.

Something about the lack of gameplay and news on what was a remaster of a beloved title in one of the most iconic video game series just felt off. Sadly, Square Enix announced that Crystal Chronicles’ remaster would be delayed from its January 2020 release date.

At the time, no new release date was given outside of a general Summer 2020 window. However, just last month, the developer did reveal that the game will launch worldwide on Aug. 27.

The Last of Us 2

2020 video game delays

Naughty Dog’s latest masterpiece, The Last of Us Part II was unfortunately delayed at the tail-end of last year for an expected release in May. The game would tell the next chapter of Ellie and Joel’s story, and how Ellie finds herself dead-set on a quest for vengeance.

Unfortunately, PS4 owners were left disappointed a mere month before the game’s slated May release, when Covid-19 reared its ugly head and caused logistical issues for companies across the world. Sony was one such affected business, and so indefinitely delayed The Last of Us 2 until the situation was a little clearer.

Fast forward a few more weeks and a post on the PlayStation Blog revealed that The Last of Us Part II would release on June 19. With that having been and gone, and The Last of Us 2 being one of the best games we’ve played this year, we’re happy to say it was well worth the wait.

New Release Date: June 19, 2020 (Out Now!)

Dying Light 2

The first Dying Light took a lot of players by surprising. A stealth release in the middle of January 2015 led to a lot of players initially overlooking the title, but when people began getting their hands on it, the blend of parkour and zombie-killing proved to be too much fun to put down.

With Dying Light 2, the world is in a new, modern “Dark Ages” and players will be able to explore a map four times the size of the original game’s and will go about dealing with different factions of survivors. The actions you make will ultimately determine the state of the game world and how the NPCs view you. Throw in four-player co-op and we’re all in.

Unfortunately, back in January, the Dying Light Twitter account shared the disappointing news that Spring 2020 release window would be missed. Instead, the game was delayed indefinitely and we’re still none the wiser on when Dying Light 2 will be in our hands.

With the PS5 and Xbox Series X on the horizon and the game’s writer Chris Avellone recently departing following sexual misconduct allegations made against him, we could see Dying Light 2 pushed into at least the early months of 2021.

New Release Date: TBA

Ghost of Tsushima

ghost of tsushima, 2020 video game delays

Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima is shaping up to be the PS4’s swansong, with the PS5 due to hit store shelves sometime this holiday season. Players assume the role of Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior and one of the last surviving members of his clan following a ruthless Mongol invasion led by the General Khotun Khan.

We were supposed to be diving into Ghost of Tsushima’s intense combat and sprawling open world tomorrow (June 26)! Unfortunately, yet another victim of the Covid-19 outbreak resulted in Sony postponing its release to July 17.

New Release Date: July 17, 2020

Iron Man VR

When it comes to superheroes that perfectly lend themselves to a virtual reality (VR) experience, Iron Man will inevitably fall somewhere around the top of that list for just about everyone. I mean, Mr. Stark can fly about with jets on his hands and feet and blast baddies out of the air without breaking a sweat. Who doesn’t want to step into that suit?!

Iron Man VR was supposed to bring us exactly that on Feb. 28. This release date wasn’t met, with an announcement in January stating that the development team needed more time to “meet the high expectations of our amazing community.” Unfortunately, yet another victim of the Covid-19 outbreak, Sony opted to delay Iron Man VR by a couple months. The game is now slated for a July 3 release.

New Release Date: July 3, 2020

Minecraft Dungeons

2020 video game delays

Everyone’s heard of Minecraft and so it should come as no surprise that Microsoft and Mojang Studios took advantage of the block-building series’ immense popularity and announced Minecraft Dungeons.

A top-down dungeon crawler, players make their way through various different Biomes, taking on iconic Minecraft mobs all in the hop of defeating the evil Arch-Illager once and for all.

With short but sweet levels, simple and compelling gameplay, and a ton of different difficulties to play through and loot to grind out, Minecraft Dungeons can keep you hooked for hours at a time.

As you might have guessed, Minecraft Dungeons was another game that succumbed to a release date delay due to the arrival of Covid-19 onto the world stage. Fortunately, it only turned out to be pushed back by a month or so, eventually releasing on May 26.

New Release Date: May 26, 2020 (Out Now!)
