Final Fantasy 7: How to Assess & Check Weaknesses

final fantasy 7 remake, assess

The materia system is Final Fantasy 7’s unique RPG mechanic, allowing players to “build” their characters with different attributes. For the remake, gaining access to some of the most powerful materia is done by completing Battle Intel for an NPC named Chadley. It’s something you’ll absolutely want to take the time to do throughout your Midgar adventure, but you’ll need to understand the assess ability first. Here’s how to assess and check weaknesses in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

How to Assess & Check Weaknesses in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

You’ll first meet Chadley in the Sector 7 Slums when you’re given time to complete various side quests in the area. While Chadley’s particular quest doesn’t sound particularly exciting, it’s actually the only one you should definitely complete.

Chadley wants you to assess different enemies using his Assess materia, and he promises new materia as a reward. It’s a pretty good deal, especially because using Assess is a sinch.

To Assess an enemy, simply open your inventory, then access equipment and materia, and then equip one of your party with the Assess materia. It doesn’t matter who has it.

Now that you have the materia equipped, the next time you’re in battle, charge up the party member with Assess’ ATB gauge and then select the ability, Assess. This will instantly run a diagnostic on the enemy, providing you with information about the monster, such as its weaknesses, its resistances, great resistances, immunity to status effects, and immunities to elemental effects.

Importantly, it will also tick off one of the required Battle Intel reports for Chadley.

Chadley initially only wants two reports (it doesn’t matter which enemy you assess), but later you’ll be assigned more. The more work you do for Chadley the better the materia he’ll have available for purchase.

Let’s recap the process with a step-by-step:

  1. After meeting with Chadley and gaining the Assess materia, open your inventory and assign it to a slot on any party member.

  2. During battle, wait for the character you have given Assess’ ATB gauge to fill, then cast Assess from the Spell menu (no MP required).

  3. You will instantly be given information on the enemy you have assessed, including its weaknesses and resistances. Use the appropriate spells to exploit this information.

That should be everything you need to know about how to assess and check weaknesses in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. For more useful information, Twinfinite’s guide wiki has everything you need.
