As you explore Midgar in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, you’ll quickly meet an NPC named Chadley who gives you Battle Intel quests to complete and rewards you with new Materia for sale. You can also unlock new summoning Materia from him as well. After reaching the Sector 5 slums, you’ll gain access to his portable combat simulator where you can start trying to fight the summons themselves.

After you’ve gotten Shiva and Fat Chocobo from him, you can unlock the Leviathan mission from him by completing five more Battle Intel quests. After that, it’s business as usual, as you can just talk to him, select the VR Missions option, and choose to fight Leviathan.

How to Beat Leviathan

Leviathan is much tougher than Shiva and Fat Chocobo, though it is possible to beat it with just two party members. In our playthrough, we managed to best it with Cloud and Tifa; just make sure to have Barrier and Haste, along with the appropriate healing spells on them.

At the start of the fight, you’ll want to put Haste and Barrier on your characters for increased ATB charge rates and extra protection. We also had the Elemental and Lightning Materia linked on Cloud’s weapon, allowing him to deal thunder damage with basic attacks. Leviathan is most vulnerable to Fire and Lightning, so you’ll want to pelt it with those.

The key here is to try to stick as close to the enemy as possible as it has a lot of ranged attacks that can be quite deadly. There are times where Leviathan might use Aquatic Focus, which makes it seem like it’s about to unleash a powerful AoE attack, but that’s actually your best chance to get in close and deal as much damage as possible. If you can deal enough damage at that point in time, you can Pressure Leviathan, allowing you to build up the Stagger bar quickly.

About partway through the fight, Leviathan will start flying around the arena, using Briny Barrage to launch homing missiles at the party while spinning tornadoes start enveloping the area. Steer clear of the tornadoes, and block the Briny Barrage if you can. At this point, try pelting it with magic spells to get it to come down, or use a summon (Ifrit is a good choice here) to deal extra damage.

Once it falls back down to the ground, use your Limit Breaks and whatever high level abilities you have to quickly deplete its HP.
