The Giant Water Bug is making its debut in the series in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Embracing both land and water, the Giant Water Bug likes to try and find the middle ground between the two terrains. As such, they can be pretty tricky to hunt down if you’re wanting to farm them for Bells, or just add one to Blathers’ collection in his museum. Here’s how to catch Giant Water Bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

As is the case with all the critters in New Horizons, the Giant Water Bug will only appear during certain months of the year. We’ve listed when the Giant Water Bug appears in both northern and southern hemisphere islands below:

  • Northern Hemisphere: April – September
  • Southern Hemisphere: October – March

You can’t just catch it at any time of day, though. The Giant Water Bug can only be caught in these months during the hours of 7pm until 8am the next day. That means you’ll need to be a bit of a night owl to track one down.

Giant Water Bugs can only be found in ponds or rivers. You will never find them out at sea. Instead, these bugs can be found on the surface of rivers and ponds, often resting up against the side before swimming across to the other side and doing the same.

To catch a Giant Water Bug, simply ready your net by holding A and begin creeping towards it. Let go of A once your net is in range, and you’ll sweep it down and catch it in one.

If you miss, fear not, the Giant Water Bug tends to just swim to the other side of the river or pond, so work your way around and try again.
