The battle royale genre only really came to the forefront of players’ minds back in 2017. With the release of the original PUBG, the craze was born, as players looked to eliminate one another and be the last-man-standing whatever the cost. Fortnite soon took the BR crown, and hasn’t let go of it since, despite competition from EA and Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends.
Now, as we move into 2020, we take a look at the next four games that look to try and steal Fortnite’s crown and reign supreme of the battle royale genre. So, without further ado, let’s check them out.
Valhall
New Battle Royale Games 2020
Valhall is battle royale set in a Viking world. A 50-player first-and-third-person perspective game, players will need to get up close and personal with their opponents if they’re going to take it down.
The story here is something along the lines of players must take Odin’s sword and stop the oncoming apocalypse from happening. To figure out which one Viking will take on the job, they murder each other until only one remains. Makes sense… we guess?
What makes Valhall even more interesting is its Wield Mjolnir mode. In this mode, players must try and seek down Thor’s legendary hammer, Mjolnir. After that, it’s a case of using this magical, flying hammer to put all other players in the game to rest. It’s kind of like the Thanos mode that hit Fortnite back in 2018 for the release of Infinity War. But you’ve got a flying hammer, so that’s a win.
Valhall is coming to Steam Early Access at some point in 2020, though no official release date has been confirmed just yet. No console releases have been announced as of yet, either.
Spellbreak
New Battle Royale Games 2020
Spellbreak is an upcoming game from Proletariat and the developer’s attempt at delivering a blockbuster of a battle royale title.
The game mixes things up a bit from other battle royale titles right now. It’s set in a fantasy, magical world where magic and spells are the order of the day. Send fireballs careering towards your opponents, or lay down a protective spell to mitigate incoming damage.
Currently, Spellbreak is available to play, but only if you can get a place in the Closed Alpha. Even in its current form, there’s plenty to sink your teeth into with excellent presentation and strategic, fluid, spellcasting action.
Fortunately, there is a Closed Beta coming to the PS4 in the Spring, so it’ll have an extra layer of polish and production value to things then, should you want to wait for it to be in a more complete form before diving in.
Dying Light Bad Blood
New Battle Royale Games 2020
Despite already being out in early access, and the fact it has been for some time, it feels like 2020 could finally be the year Dying Light Bad Blood makes its official release.
Currently only available on PC, but slated for console releases down the line, Bad Blood is a 12-player battle royale experience where they’re thrown into a zombie-infested area and must be the last one standing… as expected.
Bad Blood throws in all of the slick parkour movements of Dying Light, blends it into a PvPvE experience, and lets you hack your way to become the last man standing.
With Dying Light 2 coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime in Spring 2020, what better battle royale title could you play alongside it? The answer? None.
Fractured Lands
New Battle Royale Games 2020
If you’re looking for something wholly different in the battle royale genre, then Fractured Lands is definitely one to check out.
Fractured Lands is a post-apocalyptic, Mad Max-inspired battle royale experience. Players must scavenge the wasteland in search their very own vehicle, which can be upgraded and improved by finding new customisation options. A jet booster to speed up your car, or a lethal new weapon to demolish the opposition, you get the point: build the ultimate fighting vehicle and reign supreme.
Of course, over time the storm circle shrinks, forcing you into conflict with the other players, so you will want to build a formidable arsenal at some point. Alternatively, you can join forces with other players and take on the wasteland together. This adds another tactical layer to the gameplay as you tweak and adapt your loadout to compliment your teammate’s.
Fractured Lands is another game currently in early access on Steam. The official release should come at some point in 2020.
