With 2019 well and truly winding down, we couldn’t help but look towards the swathes of 2020 games we’d soon be playing. Sometimes though, things don’t always go to plan, and games need some extra time in the metaphorical oven.
If we were betting people, we’d probably look to these four titles to get some form of delay. Obviously, we hope they don’t. We want to be diving into these awe-inspiring worlds sooner rather than later, too. At least the wait will be worth it though.
So, without further ado, here are our four 2020 games we think will probably get delayed from their currently slated release dates/ windows. Disagree with us? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered
Earlier this year, Square Enix announced it was bringing back Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, the four-player co-op title that released all the way back in 2003.
Arriving with a number of new features such as updated visuals and audio, new character voice-overs, and a new online multiplayer mode, there’s plenty of reasons to jump into this remaster whether you’re a first-timer or you’ve beaten it a few times already.
Even better, it’ll feature cross-play functionality, allowing those on PS4, Switch, iOS and Android to take on the new dungeons and bosses being added into the remaster together.
Alas, all of this is quite the hefty amount of work, and the game’s currently slated for a Jan. 23 release.
That’s just over a month away, but Crystal Chronicles Remastered hasn’t had a whole lot of the limelight since its release date reveal back in September.
Plus, we hate to be those guys, but Square Enixs’ track record when it comes to delaying games doesn’t bode well, with both Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 suffering from delays, even after Final Fantasy XV’s massive release date event they hosted.
Marvel’s Avengers
2020 Games That Will Probably Get Delayed
If there’s one game that immediately left a majority of those who checked it out to be disappointed when it was revealed this year, it was Marvel’s Avengers.
Right from its first proper reveal this year, fans were divided over character models, the seeming lack of direction the game had, and were still kind of confused as to exactly what the game even was.
Skip forward about six months and everything’s non-the-clearer. We’ve still not seen a whole lot of Marvel’s Avengers, and it hasn’t reignited that excitement that followed its first ever reveal teaser.
We could be completely wrong, but as another title courtesy of Square Enix (developed by Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics), Avengers seems delay-prone from the off.
Add in a hearty dose of mixed reactions this early on prior to its release on May 15, 2020, and it just… doesn’t bode well.
There’s still six months for the development teams to get things polished up and show off a more impressive chunk of gameplay than what was shown at E3. Whether or not it’s enough to make the game pass internal standards, however, remains to be seen.
Half-Life: Alyx
2020 Games That Will Probably Get Delayed
Well then, I don’t think many of us would have guessed that we’d get a new Half-Life game announced in 2019. Even fewer would have guessed that this game — titled Half-Life: Alyx — would turn out to be a VR game.
Set between the events of the first and second Half-Life titles, players assume the role of Alyx Vance, as he tries to single-handedly take the fight to mankind’s alien suppressors known as the Combine.
Currently slated for a vague March 2020 release, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this slip back a little later in the year, perhaps into Summer. VR projects are still fairly unfamiliar ground, and with the weight of the Half-Life’s critical acclaim on Alyx’s shoulders, you can bet your bottom dollar the folks over at Valve will want this to be nothing short of spectacular.
Cyberpunk 2077
2020 Games That Will Probably Get Delayed
It pains me to write this very entry, as Cyberpunk 2077 is without a doubt my most anticipated title of 2020. Its sprawling cyberpunk world looks to be oozing with just as much content as The Witcher 3‘s world, and the change to a first-person perspective aims to bump up the immersion.
CD Projekt Red are a talented bunch of perfectionists, and it’s for this very reason that a delay may be on the horizon. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was delayed from its initial Feb. 24, 2015 release date to May 19 of that year to “limit any bugs.”
While CDPR did mention back then that setting “the release date too hastily” was a “hard lesson, one to take to heart for the future,” it’s understandable that bugs and unforeseen circumstances could hinder Cyberpunk 2077’s release right on the final furlong.
We hope we’re wrong, but if CDPR needs a few months to tweak the game up, it’s completely fine by us. You just know that the wait’s going to be worth it.
