4 Things to Know Before Starting Death Stranding

There’s a LOT of Walking

things to know, death stranding

We know this is incredibly obvious especially if you’ve seen any of the trailers released in the build-up to the release of Death Stranding.

However, whatever your expectation is, triple it. Don’t underestimate how often and how much you’ll be walking in this game, and that might not be your cup of tea.

There is a level of realism to the traveling in Death Stranding that goes as far as needing to change your boots on long journeys so the length of most trips is pretty long.

You’ll be getting your steps in while playing the game but it’ll be through gorgeous scenery that has the occasional spooky monster.

It’s A Kojima Game

Another no-brainer statement, we hear you say. Well, not everybody knows exactly what they’re in for when it comes to a Hideo Kojima game, so allow us to explain.

There will be a *lot* of cutscenes, a lot of dialogue, a lot of characters, and a lot of information that is often described in bizarre lingo. Even if you can wrap your head around all the jargon, there’s a wild story here that’s extremely hard to follow even if you take your time with it.

Death Stranding also has weird and slightly ridiculous humor weaved on top of its incredibly serious themes. There’s a big cheese factor here, despite the subject matter. That’s Kojima.

He certainly doesn’t pull punches with his games and so if this is your first Kojima game, strap in for the ride.

The Controls Will Start Off Clunky

Death Stranding uses a lot of physics in its gameplay. Cargo will weigh you down and tilt you off balance, deep water can wash you away, momentum can either stop you in your tracks or have you pick up speed, and there are many other things that can affect your character’s movement.

With that, in addition to the general learning curve, controls may feel a little harder to get used to compared to other games.

Of course, the game isn’t impossible to learn or manage but there’s still a level of roughness to the controls that may or may not turn players off.

It May Be A Tad Scary

The BTs are creepy, invisible enemies that can pop up without a moment’s notice. The gameplay surrounding these individuals ramps up the suspense factor of Death Stranding by a thousand.

All you have is your Gucci fanny pack BB, a light that flashes in the direction of the enemy, and your character. You also have to occasionally hold your breath if you get too close to the BTs.

Couple that with an abrupt shift to a dark environment, Death Stranding may end up being a little too scary for some. It’s not exactly a horror game but it does try to spook you.

Of course, you can buy the game and find out for yourself.
