The long wait for Shenmue 3 is finally at an end today as the game makes its anticipated launch. A new video today published by Deep Silver called the “Out Now Special” takes a look back at the series’ roots and the development of each game leading to Shenmue 3.
It’s a fascinating watch with lots of insight from developers such as former Sega President Peter Moore, Shenmue creator and Shenmue 3 director Yu Suzuki, and animation producer Hiroaki Takeuchi. There’s also interesting supporting commentary from various games industry personalities, too.
We get to hear about the origins of the Shenmue series: inspirations, concepts, early development, and its troubled debut on Dreamcast. Moving forward, it then tells the tale of the third game’s Kickstarter success and journey to launch.

Shenmue 3 launches today for PC and PS4, though the review embargo is not until later this evening.
