Players who compete in the game’s online battles and score at least 100 points during the event will earn a Luigi’s Mansion 3 theme in Tetris 99.

Points will be awarded based on how well players rank in each battle, with 1st place receiving 100 points, 2nd place receiving 50 points, 3rd place receiving 30 points, 4th-10th place receiving 20 points, 11th-30th place receiving 15 points, 31st-50th place receiving 10 points, 51st-90th place receiving 5 points, and 91st-99th place receiving 1 point.

This competition is free to enter as long as you are subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online and have the game Tetris 99 (which is free to download with the online subscription). A physical copy of Tetris 99 was made available in September, and it comes with a 12-month membership of Nintendo Switch Online.

If you are not familiar with how to play Tetris 99, it is a twist on the classic game Tetris in which you are matched up against 98 other players.

You compete to be the last one standing by clearing your lines of Tetriminos and by attacking other players to make it harder for them to clear their own lines. If your lines reach the top of the screen, you are eliminated. The final player remaining after the other 98 have been eliminated wins 1st place in the match.

Tetris 99 in-game themes customize game elements such as the background art and music, and the theme prize for this Maximus Cup features Luigi and Gooigi from the upcoming game.

If you’re feeling up for the Maximus Cup challenge, you can read the basics of Tetris 99 and the guidelines for the event on Nintendo’s website. As for Luigi’s Mansion 3, the game releases on October 31, 2019.
