Developer AlphaDream has filed for bankruptcy in Tokyo after wracking up a debit of over $4 million. The studio is best known for its work on Mario & Luigi RPG series, including games like Superstar Saga, Bowser’s Inside Story, and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.
The report comes by way of Yahoo Japan, in which we learn that “sluggish” revenue income and increasing development costs saw the company’s revenue slide from around $3.5 million in 2014 to operating at a loss over the past few years and now into a state of insolvency.
The company was first established in May 1991 as Mente Tomo and Ai, an interior and exterior finishing company. It would later change names to AlphaStar Soft in January 200, and then AlphaDream, following a change of industries to video game development.
In addition to the Mario and Luigi RPG series, AlphaDream also worked on the Hamtaro series, developing Rainbow Rescue, Ham-Ham Games, and Hi! HamTaro Ham-Ham Challenge.
