There are lots of areas on Koholint Island that require the use of the hookshot to traverse through them, but you actually won’t be getting the hookshot until the fifth dungeon in Link’s Awakening, which is called Catfish’s Maw.

To get the hookshot in the dungeon, you will pretty much get it organically by going through the motions and progressing through the dungeon.

Eventually, you will fight this skeleton boss several times in different areas in the dungeon, and once you fight him for the fourth time, he’ll drop the hookshot on the ground and it will be yours for the taking.

Not only can you use the hookshot to attach yourself to wooden poles, blocks, and treasure chests, it can also be used to attack enemies, leaving them stunned. This makes them easier to hit, and in some cases, you can even pull shields away from the enemies.

To sum things up:

  1. You won’t be able to get the hookshot until the fifth dungeon, Catfish’s Maw.

  2. You’ll find it organically in the dungeon after beating the skeleton mini-boss four times.

  3. You can then use it to pull yourself across gaps by attaching it to chests, blocks, and wooden pegs.

  4. Make sure to actually equip it from the menu though.
