What Is a Spawn Point in Minecraft?

A spawn point is basically where you’ll respawn if you happen to die during your adventures in Minecraft. Once you’ve died and choose to respawn, you’ll appear back at this exact spot. By default, this will be where you originally spawned into the world when it was first created.

However, there are ways in which you can change its location.

How to Set a Spawn Point in Minecraft

There are two ways to set your spawn point in Minecraft:

  1. Sleeping in a Bed
  2. Using the /spawnpoint command (only available on PC, Xbox One)

Down below, we’ll talk you through what you need to know for each of these methods.

Sleeping in a Bed to Set a Spawn Point in Minecraft

The first option you’ve got is to simply sleep in a bed. When you sleep, the location of the bed will then become your spawn point if you happen to die. As such, it’s always worthwhile carrying a bed with you if you’re going on an adventure, so that you won’t have to retread your steps if a Creeper happens to blow up in your face.

Once you’ve placed a bed wherever you want your spawn point to be, simply right click on PC, press LT on Xbox One, L2 on PS4, and ZL on Switch to sleep in the bed. When doing so, Minecraft will automatically set that as your new spawn point.

Spawnpoint Command

Alternatively, if you’re happy enabling cheats in Minecraft, you can always use a console command to set a new spawn point wherever you like. First, you’ll need to enable cheats. We’ve listed how to do this on both PC and Xbox One down below.

PC

  • Open Game Menu
  • Click Open to LAN
  • Change the ‘Allow Cheats’ toggle to ‘On.’
  • Create your world.

Xbox One

  • From the main menu, select ‘Play’
  • Create New
  • Choose the ‘Create New World’ option on the next page.
  • On the Game Settings screen, choose ‘Game’ from the ‘Edit Settings’ sidebar menu on the left.
  • Go right to the bottom of this Game Settings menu and you’ll spot a toggle to ‘Activate Cheats.’
  • Turn this to ‘On.’ (Note that this will disable you from earning any achievements in that world.)

Once cheats are enabled, simply press T on PC or press right on the d-pad on Xbox One to open the Chat Window. When you’re in the spot you want to set as your spawn point in Minecraft, simply enter /spawnpoint and the game will set your current location as the place you’ll come back to when you respawn.

You can also use [player] and [spawnPos] syntaxes after /spawnpoint in the chat window to set the spawn point for a particular player, and set X, Y, and Z coordinates for a different spawnpoint anywhere in your world.
