Hades, the rogue-like dungeon crawler from Supergiant Games was one of the initial three games that launched on the Epic Games Store back in December 2018 but is now breaking its chains that had it bound to Epic and is launching on Steam Early Access by December of this year.
Set in Greek mythology, you play as Hades’ son Zagreus, the immortal prince of the Underworld trying to escape. The rogue-like element of the game is tied to how Zagreus never experiences a permanent death, where upon dying the game forces you back to a level’s starting point. Each attempt to escape the Underworld nets Zagreus new skills and talents, making each new attempt at escaping more likely.
According to the Hades FAQ, there’s plenty of other gods and goddesses from Greek mythology, with appearances of Zeus, Athena and Poseidon. Heroes from mythology appear in Hades, as Zagreus will run into Achilles at one point.
Supergiant Games celebrated their 10-year anniversary with a tweet that included the announcement for Hades coming to Steam:
Supergiant Games planned on having Hades be an Epic exclusive until the game’s Early Access was complete before they would announce it was coming to other platforms. However, the release to Steam Early Access for Hades means the studio could have other plans for the game coming to consoles. If Bastion and Transistor are any indicator, as both titles eventually ended up available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.
Hades is set to release for Steam Early Access on December 10, 2019.
