New Death Stranding Images Show That You Can Sleep in the Game

Death Stranding Director Hideo Kojima is continuing to share off-screen images of his game as he takes breaks from testing it, and today he provided the solution to a small mystery.

In the image we reported about yesterday, there was a small detail that stroke me as odd. The command prompt to get out of the sitting position was different. Two images used the Japanese verb tachiagaru” while the other one displayed “okiru.” Both verbs essentially mean “stand up” but the lack of context made me miss the nuance.

That context was provided by Kojima-san today.

While it’s true that both verbs can be translated as “stand up,” “okiru” actually includes the meaning of “wake up.” Basically, in some of the images showcased by Kojima-san, Sam is simply sitting, while in the rest, he’s actually sleeping. Today’s images and the brief commentary show that more clearly.

At the moment, we do not know whether sleeping has a gameplay effect and how that works, but considering that the game involves traveling long distances, the possibility that it’s meaningful is definitely there.

Death Stranding is coming to PS4 on November 8, 2019.
