5 Avengers That Need the Spider-Man PS4 Treatment

Spider-Man on PS4 set a phenomenal new precedent for Marvel video games, giving players an immersive open world to explore along with a gripping, emotional narrative. With Spider-Man now a thing of the past, and Avengers Endgame drawing near, we have a few other ideas for Avengers that should get their own original game.

Iron Man

Yes, there’s been plenty of games featuring Iron Man in the past, but the problem is we’ve never really gotten an outstanding Iron Man game. Yet, out of all the Marvel heroes out there, Iron Man is probably most deserving of getting a fantastic Spider-Man-like experience.

Another recent AAA release showed us just how much fun flying around as Iron Man could be, and that game is Anthem. If an Iron Man game used the same kind of traversal system as Anthem it could be tremendous fun, letting you seamlessly transition from ground to air combat.

Iron Man’s various weapons systems would allow for a ton of variation and customization, just like Spider-Man’s different gadgets. Of course there’d probably be more of an emphasis on ranged combat, rather than hand-to-hand.

Tony Stark also makes for a perfect protagonist to tell a more personal, emotional story. Stark’s character arc is one of the most engaging in all of Marvel history, with his transition from cold businessman to stalwart hero. An Iron Man game in the vein of Spider-Man would be best telling a story for Tony near the end of his career, bringing a reckoning for the man who’s lived a double life.

Black Panther

Black Panther has always been a fascinating hero, but his big MCU debut put the character on the map like never before. Now would be the perfect time to reintroduce Black Panther with his very own game, a game that could be seriously different from anything else out there.

Imagine an open world title that lets you explore the cities and jungles of Wakanda, using Black Panther’s kinetic suit to take down mercenaries, aliens, or whatever other threats may come. The real tempting idea of a Black Panther game, is how visually and aesthetically diverse it could be.

We’ve seen very few video games that are set in Africa and/or use traditional African designs. Much like the film was, a Black Panther game would be a huge breath of fresh air that would really allow a development team to dig deep on visual design.

Of course, it helps that Black Panther would just be so much fun to play as, and a combat system similar to Spider-Man or the Arkham games would fit perfectly for the hero.

With Black Panther’s newfound popularity, let’s hope we can see more one day.

Ant-Man

How many games have you played with a segment that shrinks you down to a minuscule size? We’ve seen this mechanic in countless titles, like The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap, South Park: Stick of Truth, Donkey Kong 64, Kingdom Hearts, and more.

A shrinking mechanic like that could be put to fantastic use in an Ant-Man game, one that dynamically allows you to shrink and grow. It’d be ambitious sure, but think of the possibilities for Ant-Man. You could shrink down for stealth, taking down enemies as a pint-sized hero. Or it could feature into exploration mechanics, giving you an open world to explore that opens up even more options depending on your size.

Then there’s how much fun an Ant-Man game could be with a light-hearted story; maybe a heist mission like the first movie, something more personal than just saving the world.

If Disney and Marvel are looking to expand the world of Spider-Man PS4 into a universe, Ant-Man would be a great next step to that.

Black Widow

Plenty of superhero games have used stealth before, including 2018’s Spider-Man, but most of it feels half-baked. Superhero games, generally, fall into the action-adventure genre, which is why we could desperately use some different experiences. With Black Widow getting her own movie in the next MCU phase, it seems the perfect time to bring her into the world of video games as well.

A Black Widow game would work perfectly as a Splinter Cell-like experience, with a little bit of superhero flair added in. You could take the time to also reintroduce the S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra conflict, layering in plenty of conspiracies and plot twists along the way.

Considering the stand-up job Insomniac Games did with Spider-Man, it’d be great to see Marvel start giving other heroes and properties to more big-name developers.

Give Black Widow to Ubisoft Montreal (Splinter Cell: Blacklist) or Eidos (Deus Ex: Mankind Divided), and you might really be onto something great.

Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch)

Scarlet Witch has jumped the line between villain and hero multiple times throughout her history, and she’s one of the most powerful mutants in the Avengers, and the entire Marvel universe. The character has an incredibly diverse set of powers, including power over time manipulation, reality warping, energy projection, magic, and teleportation.

This makes Scarlet Witch the perfect choice for a super-powered video game, maybe something in the vein of the inFamous franchise. Wanda Maximoff’s powers open up a ton of options for both combat and traversal, letting you fly through the air with reality warping and bend physical objects to your will.

You could imagine a game that plays like a hybrid between inFamous: Second Son and Quantum Break, giving you a ton of different options to pick from with Wanda’s powers. You could even make it a full-blown RPG that gives you a ton of control over how to develop Wanda and her powers.

Again, like with the others, the idea here is that Scarlet Witch could be something totally different for superhero games. Spider-Man PS4 was fantastic, but in order for the genre to really flourish, we need to see the introduction of unique ideas and worlds.
