How to Desync and Unpair Ice Climbers in Smash Bros. Ultimate

Recommended Videos

After being away from Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS, the Ice Climbers are back and ready to rumble in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Usually, this duo sticks together and are controlled at the same time, but there is a way to desync and unpair the Ice Climbers in order to unleash some killer combos.

There are a variety of ways to control Popo and Nana independently of each other by using some fighting techniques that you may not have known about.

The Ice Climbers can desync from each other by using a dash back, sidestep dodge, or a grab attack after immediately rolling into it. As soon as you enter the grab animation for a back, forward, down, or back throw, the other Ice Climber can be commanded to do almost any kind of attack in order to maximize damage such as a down neutral, up aerial, or even a side neutral.

Another way to desync and unpair the both of them is through aerial landing lag. Right before the main Ice Climber lands, you can input a command such as a down neutral and Nana will perform it as soon as she lands as long as you let go of the button before she lands on the ground.

You only have a couple of frames to do this correctly, but if you do, you’ll have Nana performing an attack, letting you control Popo to do whatever you choose, such as a grab or a smash attack. Just make sure you input her command right before Popo lands on the ground after any kind of aerial move. (Thanks IzawSmash)
