Who Is the Third Person in Sora’s Heart in Kingdom Hearts 3?
Kingdom Hearts 3 is finally here, and with it a slew of convoluted twists and reveals that can leave people with questions. One in particular, though, has many people wondering: Who is the third person in Sora’s heart?
*Warning: Spoilers Ahead!!!* Stop reading now if you don’t want to be spoiled on a major late-game plot point in Kingdom Hearts 3.
Revealed by Ienzo during the middle portion of Kingdom Hearts 3, the revelation poses a huge mystery for Sora and his friends, as well as players, to mull over.
Sure, they were aware of Roxas and Ventus’ existences in Sora’s heart, but the presence of a third entity residing within the Keyblade wielder had never been explicitly mentioned.
That’s why it may take some digging into the lore of several of the spin-off games, and progressing through the entirety of Kingdom Hearts 3, to figure it out. As such, we’ve done the leg work and sorted the whole mystery out for your convenience.
Again, as stated above, the following section contains heavy spoilers for the end of the game. If you haven’t completed Kingdom Hearts 3 yet, or clicked this article by accident, turn back now.
The third person within Sora’s heart is Xion, the forgotten 14th member of Organization XIII from Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.
Though she was originally a being created through the combination of Sora’s memories with a replica – and seemingly destroyed when he regained them – the memories she created with Axel and Roxas helped her to form her own heart.
This is similar to how the Nobodies in Organization XIII like Axel and Roxas formed their own hearts over time, and could be considered their own beings after existing long enough and building enough connections with others.
As such, when she supposedly disappeared at the end of 358/2 Days, her newly formed heart actually took refuge inside Sora’s in the same way that Ventus’ did, saving it from complete erasure.
This can be inferred to be the reason she appears in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Both Sora and Riku encounter Xion at different points near the end of the game.
Sora encounters her in The World That Never Was. When he does, he begins to cry due to Roxas’ sudden remembrance of her.
Meanwhile, Riku encounters her during his final dive into Sora’s heart. The reason she appears is because her heart dwells within Sora’s, and as such can be found within when the Power of Awakening is used on him.
Unfortunately, Sora still doesn’t know who she is and can’t recall her name until he encounters her reformed replica in the Keyblade Graveyard.
Here, it is revealed that Xion’s replica body was reconstructed by Xehanort and his allies to be used as a member of the 13 Darknesses.
Convinced her friends had forgotten her and that she cannot exist while Sora does, she complied and ended up facing down Axel and Kairi before Sora intervenes.
It is here that Roxas reveals he knows her name and remembers her through Sora, just like how Ventus attempted to confront Vanities in Monstropolis. As a result, Xion’s heart reconnects with the new replica body, allowing her to exist in earnest.
It’s all definitely a bit convoluted, but considering how heavily Xion has been featured on Kingdom Hearts 3’s cover, it’s also one that Tetsuya Nomura was at least trying to leave hints pointing toward.
That should cover everything you need to know about who the third person in Sora’s heart is. If you’ve got a different theory or a piece of evidence we missed, feel free to mention it in the comments.
