Orange is the New Black

It’s time to get stuck in to our list of Netflix shows to binge in 2019, but if you’re after Anime-centric content then we have a list just for you: the best anime shows coming to Netflix in 2019.

One of the longest-running Netflix original series out there, Orange is the New Black is fast approaching its long-awaited conclusion in summer of 2019.

Confirmed to be its final hour, the show’s seventh season is set to wrap up the story arcs of former drug smuggler Piper Chapman and her fellow inmates, as well as the many adventures they’ve taken part in at Litchfield Penitentiary.

It’s a little sad to see, but also one most fans are ready for. The series’ plot has gone in plenty of directions over the years, but more recently it’s shown that there isn’t much more they can do before the show’s conceit runs stale.

To that end, the series ending this year feels fitting, and it gives fans new and old alike a good reason to binge through the entirety of the series once it becomes available.

Kingdom

For all of the many twists that have been made to the Zombie Apocalypse genre, not many have looked to past historical settings or martial arts flicks the way Kingdom does.

Set during the Joseon period of Korean history – basically, anywhere between the 14th and 19th century – the series sees the Crown Prince Yi-Chang tasked with stopping a zombie outbreak orchestrated by a power-hungry faction vying for the throne.

This is easier said than done though, as the survivors have few ways aside from martial arts to defend themselves from the flood of undead monsters bearing down on them.

As such, they must go toe to toe with the monsters in hand to hand combat, making for some high-risk high-reward battles against undead hoards and scheming usurpers alike.

It’s an unlikely mix of genres that is both strange and endlessly entertaining. It may not be for everyone, but those that give it a chance will be sucked in for the whole ride before they know it.

Stranger Things

This wouldn’t be a list of Netflix shows to binge in 2019 without mentioning Stranger Things.

A cultural phenomenon that took everyone by surprise when it premiered in 2016, the show has continued to maintain its relevance and popularity over the years.

It’s little surprise though, as its cast of characters and vintage 1980s blended with an engaging Sci-Fi story have only improved with each subsequent episode.

The show was confirmed to have a third season on the way in a post to Twitter by Netflix shortly after the second season’s premiere and has since received a July release date.

As such, there’s plenty of reason to binge the series and get caught up before the third season’s premiere, or to binge through everything the series has to offer once season three is out.

Ultraman

Ultraman may seem like a reboot series only anime fans will enjoy, but those who dig a little deeper will find there’s plenty enough to draw in most anyone.

Set several years after the events of the original anime, the series sees Ultraman’s son, Shinjiro Hayata, take up the hero’s mantle to take on a new threat to Earth’s peace.

This is easier said than done though, as he only requires half of the power necessary to utilize Ultramar’s abilities. As such, he must use a high-tech suit to do battle with the forces of evil, all the while searching for a way to awaken his latent abilities.

It’s a fairly straight forward plot, but also one which drips with themes and styles that fans of superhero films and series will flock to; which is good, considering the slew of Marvel superhero shows that have been canceled from the streaming platform.

To that end, it’s a show that will easily eat up a viewers’ day with a binge-watch session once it releases this April.

Russian Doll

Starring Natasha Lyonne of Orange is the New Black fame, Russian Doll is a new offering from Netflix’s 2019 lineup that shows an incredible amount of potential.

The premise sees a woman arrive at her 36th birthday party only die shortly after. And yet, after the accident occurs, she returns to a point earlier in the same day with her memories of how her death occurred intact.

As such, she must figure out a way to escape this Groundhog Day loop and keep herself from dying, or else sink into the despair of being trapped in an endless loop of death and rebirth.

It’s a novel enough premise with plenty of character provided by the performances of its cast. Even if it’s only eight episodes long, it’ll easily enrapture anyone who watches it for hours on end.

Jessica Jones

The second of the two Marvel series Netflix still has the rights to, Jessica Jones is likely headed into its final season in 2019.

A critical and fan darling since it first premiered in 2015, the series’ noir-inspired tale of a burnt-out superhero finding redemption through detective work is both vintage comic cheese and refreshingly original.

Her struggles against regular supervillains and the average human dilemma alike are always tinged with personal struggles both small and titanic, and seeing her successfully overcome them after so much hardship is exceptionally rewarding.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise the series is set to see a third season premiere in 2019, even with the recent cancellation of other Marvel series on the streaming platform.

However, it’s anyone’s guess what the show’s fate will be after the season becomes available, so 2019 might be the best chance fans have at binge-watching the series before it disappears for who knows how long.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Most people weren’t expecting Netflix to revive Sabrina the Teenage Witch for a modern audience, but that didn’t stop them from putting out one of the more interesting reboots in recent memory with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Taking the coming of age aspect of the original series and blending it with a more fleshed out world of witches and black magic, the series is equal parts grounded in reality and filled to bursting with well-made fantasy elements.

All the while, its cast of actors chew up whatever scenes they’re in, whether that means testifying in front of a Court of Injustice or standing up to Satan himself to go to the high school full of their friends.

Sure, it can come off as a little ridiculous at times, but that only makes it all the more fun and enjoyable when you binge all of its episodes at once.

Plus, with a new season set to land on Apr. 5, there’ll be even more content to prolong viewers’ binge sessions of the show soon enough.

Sex Education

Sex Education is, as its name implies, about teenagers learning about the different aspects of sex. Unlike other series though, it’s a lot less about the romantic entanglement part and more about discovering and being comfortable with one’s orientation.

Whereas other series might be more comfortable to play it safe and only scratch the surface of the topic, Sex Education dives head-first into all of the confusion and uncertainty of sex experienced during our teenage years.

How do you deal with a heartfelt attraction that won’t ever work out? Is it worth it to act on your sexual orientation if it leads to alienation among your peers? How do the power dynamic s of sex play into a budding relationship?

All of these questions and more are presented by the show, and as it progresses it provides refreshing takes and findings on all of them for the viewer to consider and, in some cases, find relief in.

It’s for this reason that so many people have already checked this promising new series out, and why it’s well worth a binge watch if you haven’t seen it yourself yet.

13 Reasons Why

While it may be straying further and further from the story the book it’s based on tells, 13 Reasons why still gives viewers plenty enough reason to keep watching.

Starting with a mystery surrounding why a young girl took her life and expanding into darker territory from there, the show isn’t afraid to examine the darker sides of its characters and the world they live in.

It isn’t perfect, and there are moments where the series could stand to handle its subject matter with a bit more tact and grace.

When it succeeds though, it does so spectacularly, and as such has led more than a few viewers to park themselves in front of their streaming device of choice.

The show was also confirmed to have a new season in the works via a teaser trailer in 2018, with a tentative 2019 release window, making it the perfect time to catch up on the series so you’re prepared for the latest cour.

Ozark

Netflix’s tale of a financial trader turned money launderer for a Mexican drug cartel drew plenty of positive buzz after its premiere in 2017, and with the premiere of its second season, it shows no signs of slowing down.

Full of characters out for themselves, and more than a few double-crosses and sudden story twists as a result, the series continues to shine a light on the bleak reality of getting caught up in a life of crime that other series might glorify.

Granted, it’s style isn’t for everyone. The dark tone of the plot can be a lot to take in one sitting, and the blue design aesthetic can put viewers off if it isn’t their style.

For everyone else though, it’s a series that will have you glued to the couch for every dark and dismal minute, and leave you ravenous for the announcement of a third season.
