Slap City takes characters from some of these games and allows players to compete in wacky multiplayer fights.
Slap City allows local play for up to four players, fights against AI, and online modes. You can participate in one-on-one ranked matches, save replays, and more.
The game currently consists of two play modes: Battle and Slap Ball. Battle is your typical Smash-like mode, and Slap Ball is a team-based sports mode where players fight while attempting to score in the opposing team’s basket. It’s kind of like full-contact basketball.
In its latest patch, 0.9, Slap City offers seven characters, 20 Battle stages, four Slap Ball stages, and a ranked online mode in beta testing.

It’s a 2D platform fighter that allows players to battle using all sorts of weapons: swords, axes, rocket lances, and more. Throwables and gadgets also appear in the game, such as bombs and mines.
Brawlhalla has some of the most polished game modes out of all the Smash Bros clones. You can play ranked in one-on-one and two-on-two modes, free-for-alls with four single players or eight players across two teams, locally with single or team matches, or just take a character to the Training Room and practice your combos.
There are also sports game modes. Bombsketball is similar to Slap City’s Slap Ball, just a little more explosive. Numerous Bouncy Bombs exist in the stage and there are two targets where the players must score by hitting the opposing team’s target with a Bouncy Bomb.
Brawlball is Brawlhalla’s take on American football—with weapons. The goal in this game mode is to grab the football in the center of the stage and run it into the opposing team’s goal zone. Players running the ball have dramatically reduced speed, and this mode requires a lot of strategy and teamwork.

Rivals of Aether is a 2D indie platform fighter with an emphasis on pixels and mechanics. In Rivals of Aether, players select characters, or Rivals, that utilize Elemental Powers of fire, water, earth, smoke, and more. It’s the spiritual sequel to Super Smash Land, a game that advertised itself as a Smash Bros demake.
Rivals of Aether features eight original characters and six additional DLC characters. Two of these DLC characters come from other games: Ori and Sein, from Ori and the Blind Forest, and Shovel Knight. The gameplay is heavily inspired by Smash Bros, and Rivals of Aether even features crossover skins from our previous game, Brawlhalla.
Despite its simple, pixelated style, Rivals of Aether is actually one of the more complex platform fighters. Game modes include Versus (competitive, including online), Story, Abyss, Tutorial, and Practice. Practice Mode even provides hitbox visualizations and frame data.
Rivals of Aether also has its own esports scene. The Rivals Championship Series features thousands of entrants and dozens of events. The live finals will feature the top four players from North America and the top player from both Europe and Australia.

On the surface, Lethal League looks like an experiment in Microsoft Paint, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Not only is the art style unique, but the gameplay strays far away from the norm and involves hitting an anti-gravity ball into the face of your opponents. Where other fighting games feature alternative game modes that incorporate sports elements, Lethal League completely embraces it as the main course of their gameplay.
Described as a 2D projectile fighter, Lethal League plays like some type of Smash Bros baseball mashup. The game’s characters all have weird quirks to them. For example, Latch is a cyborg crocodile fit with a mechanic tail. Grid is a bodysuit-wearing criminal with two-pronged electrical plugs coming out of his knuckles. Candyman is a tap-dancer with a head that looks like a jawbreaker. It gets strange, but it’s awesome.
The hip-hop and house soundtrack really fits with the look and feel of the stages and characters. The game features tracks from artists like Dr. Lazer and Bignic, and while playing you’ll see radio elements in the lower UI.

Each dynasty is composed of five different characters. The stock system in Smash Bros. exists here, but for every stock you lose, you switch characters within your dynasty. Dynasties feature characters of a diverse set of fighting styles and unique skills, so every death brings a new experience.
The crazy part is that Dynasty Feud is a game of one-hit kills. Get hit a single time and you’re done. All characters have their own special strengths and weaknesses, but all of them die this fast.
Dynasty Feud features ranked online play, an All-Star mode where you can create your own dynasty, and free-for-all and team-based matches with friends. Take into account that Dynasty Feud’s online community is completely dead on Steam though, so this game is best enjoyed locally with friends.

In Gang Beasts, you take control of a character that appears to be a blob of gelatin as you fight your way through Beef City. Everything about this title is silly and it makes a great game on the couch or at parties.
The combat in this game involves slapstick melee brawls where you can use your surroundings to help beat down up to three other players. You’ll find yourself slamming, punching, and throwing boxes at opponents until you’re the last player standing.
One of the coolest features is the character customization in Gang Beasts. Other brawlers involve a cast of characters that can only be altered through skins and costumes, but in this game, you can give your character hats, hair, coats, jackets, boots, and all types of other cosmetics and accessories to look as stupid as you want.
Gang Beasts features both local and online play in the Melee mode, or you can play the Gangs mode to fight cooperatively with friends and work your way through gangs in the mean streets of Beef City. This is a very different type of Smash Bros. alternative.

Nidhogg 2 is a fighting game sequel that brings the same gruesome combat style as the original Nidhogg, but with more to offer.
The game plays and feels like the original Nidhogg, but there are plenty of new weapons and characters. Characters can be customized with hairstyles, tops, bottoms, and more. The world in Nidhogg 2 is entirely different, too.
Nidhogg 2’s gameplay is a refreshing change when compared to similar titles. It involves a tug-of-war style of sword fighting where two players face off in an attempt to reach the opposite end of a long stage. Nidhogg 2’s single-player arcade mode plays more like a warmup than anything else, and even new players shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to stab through it. Nidhogg 2 plays best as a local multiplayer game with friends, although there is an online mode.
Matches in Nidhogg 2 can range from just a few minutes to 20—it all depends on the rules that you set. There are a ton of different variables you can change, like limiting certain weapons from spawning or setting a time limit to trigger sudden death.
Nidhogg 2 is gorier than most fighters, and characters will spew blood of all different colors when they die. Another big draw to this title is the music. The soundtrack has a heavy electronic influence from musicians like Mux Mool, Geotic, Osborne, and Daedelus.
