Here’s How to Use Amiibo & What They Do in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
With Smash Bros Ultimate finally out, fans of the series and newcomers alike might be wondering how Amiibo work in this new Smash iteration. Here’s how to use Amiibo and what they do in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
If you were someone who purchased these in the toy line’s infant days, you know the struggle of obtaining them all. Harder than catching them all in Pokemon, getting your hands on every Amiibo released was not only a battle against fellow Nintendo fans, but scalpers and GameStop, Best Buy and Toys R Us (RIP) computer systems as well.
Because of that, and the nearly $1,000 likely spent to get all of them, it makes sense that Smash players want to put their Amiibo collection to work.
How to Use Amiibo
The first thing you need to do is actually obtain an Amiibo. Some are more elusive than others, but there are plenty of easy ones for you to pick up. Once you’ve got one, go to the Games & More section of the Main Menu in Smash Bros Ultimate.
This will take you to a new screen. In the bottom right, you should spot “amiibo.” Select it and you’ll be taken to a screen asking you to tap your Amiibo into the game.
Do that and then just like in Super Smash Bros for WiiU, you’re free to make a Figure Player that can be saved to that figure.
- Go to the Main Menu
- Select Games & More
- Select “amiibo”
- Tap your Amiibo into the game
- You’re all set!
What They Do
This time around, Amiibo work exactly like they did in Smash Wii U. For those that haven’t even taken their Amiibo out of the box, if you use one in Smash Wii U or Ultimate, you’ll be able to create an FP, or Figure Player, that you can train.
The more you fight with it, the more it learns your play style and how to best fight against it. It also gets stronger with each fight, which is indicated by their FP level.
There is some new though to this system. Similar to leveling up Spirits in the Ultimate Spirits mode using snacks, you can feed your FP spirits to level them up.
For the super collector, fear not — your non-Smash Amiibo are compatible with Super Smash Bros Ultimate as well. If you were to use the Wedding Bowser Amiibo from the Super Mario Odyssey line, you would be able to create a Bowser FP, just as you would be able to with the Smash Bowser figure.
Additionally, you can tap the non-Smash Amiibo to obtain a spirit. We tried KK Rider, Alm from Fire Emblem, Pikmin, Wedding Bowser and Shovel Knight and each one gave us a different Spirit.
Just like in Smash WiiU, you can have multiple Figure Players. You simply need multiple figures. Only one Figure Player can be stored on a single figure, so if you’re looking to have more than one FP, naturally, you’re going to need more than one Amiibo.
