Smash Bros Ultimate: How to Play Online

How to Play Online in Smash Bros Ultimate

Recommended Videos

Smash has finally made it to the Switch, and things couldn’t be better. While you can train against AI, the real battle begins when you face other players online. If you think your skills are up to snuff, here’s how to play online in Smash Bros Ultimate.

Right when you load your game, you should see a slew of different options on the main menu. The online features can be accessed through the yellow tab on the lower right side of the screen. Simply click that and wait for your Switch to connect via WiFi.

From there, you have the option to either fight against other players or watch matches in Smash Bros Ultimate instead. If you choose to Smash, you’ll be greeted with three options:

  • Quickplay
  • Battle Arenas
  • Battleground Matchmaking

Quickplay, as the name implies, is all about finding an online match ASAP. You can choose to toggle rules to find matches with that specific ruleset, and you can even team up with another local player and fight others online.

Battle Arenas, on the other hand, is more of a traditional lobby in Smash Bros Ultimate. Here, you can create your own room, either public or private, and host matches with random players or your friends. On top of that, you can even assign passcodes to make sure no extra players enter your lobby. In the arena, you can duke it out in the ring, spectate the fight from the benches, or wait it out in the waiting area.

Finally, the Battleground Matchmaking lets you play offline while the game connects you with another player. As with Quickplay, you can also set your preferred matchmaking rules beforehand. That way, you won’t be forced into playing with items if you want a clean, skill-based duel.

That’s pretty much everything you need to know about how to play online in Smash Bros Ultimate. For more tips and tricks on the fighting game, be sure to check out our expansive wiki.
