Biggest Surprises From The Game Awards 2018

While The Game Awards focused on world reveals, cringy musical performances, and, of course, handing out trophies to the hard-working developers, Nintendo somehow managed to take the center stage throughout the entire ceremony.

Advertisement after advertisement for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate took over the show, reminding viewers that after the awards show, the company’s biggest crossover fighting game would be released on Switch. And just to put the icing on the cake, Nintendo announced the first DLC fighter that would be coming to the game and that character is Joker –the main character from Atlus’ Persona 5.

Nintendo promises that the other four fighters that will be evenly distributed until Feb 2020 will be just as surprising as Joker. Seeing this character being invited into Smash Bros. leaves the door open for endless possibilities. Who will we see next? Whoever it is, it’ll probably make our jaws drop just as much as this reveal did.

Joker is in a game with Solid Snake, Pikachu, Sonic, and Pac-Man – what has the world come to? Whatever’s going on, you can count me in.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 Is a Switch Exclusive

Biggest Surprises From The Game Awards 2018

No, we didn’t get the new Avengers 4 trailer during The Game Awards like people speculated and whispered on the interwebs, but we still did end up getting some Avengers-related news at the end of the day.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is real, and if that’s not shocking enough, the cooperative action game will be headed to the Nintendo Switch as an exclusive. Team Ninja (Hyrule Warriors, Dead or Alive) will be developing the title and it’s slated for a 2019 launch.

Soon, you’ll be able to play as your favorite Marvel heroes such as Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Captain America and help put an end to Thanos’ reign. It definitely looks like a fun time while we wait for Avengers: Endgame next year.

The Epic Games Store Is Alive and Kickin’

Biggest Surprises From The Game Awards 2018

Just a few days ago, Epic announced that they would be launching their own service, similar to Steam, that allows developers to put their games up for sale, giving them 88% of revenue compared to Steam’s 70%. The games’ industry is surely delighted about this new store as indie developers will be making more profit on their titles.

In the initial announcement, Epic mentioned that the store would be launching “soon,” but we didn’t know how fast it would be. During The Game Awards, not only did the Epic Games Store launch, but it has launched with some pretty high-quality stuff.

Right now on the store, you can grab Supergiant Games’ new title, Hades, as well as Ashen and Hello Neighbor: Hide & Seek. Epic also announced that users will be getting a free game every two weeks in 2019 – a title most likely being chosen by Epic themselves.

Coming out of the gates like a bat out of hell, the Epic Games Store is here to stay and with all of that money that the company has made from a small indie game called Fortnite (don’t know if you’ve heard of it), Epic has a lot of money to share with developers and they are doing just that and it’s wonderful to see.

Mortal Kombat XI Is Coming to Switch, With Gore and All

Biggest Surprises From The Game Awards 2018

Ed Boon, the creator of Mortal Kombat, walked on stage to present the award for best racing/sports game only to be interrupted by a special reveal for Mortal Kombat XI alongside a brutal, gory, and hyper-violent trailer. The trailer reveals wonderfully animated versions of Scorpion and Raiden trying to beat each other to a pulp.

Not much else gameplay was shown during the reveal, but we do know that it’s coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Oh wait, we’re getting a quick update from HQ, hold on. *Waitwhat? One other platform you say?… No way, you can’t be serious? Okay, awesome, I’ll let them know.*

So, it turns out that Mortal Kombat XI will be coming to the Nintendo Switch as well. It’s been over 10 ten years since we’ve seen the fighting franchise hit a Nintendo system so this is definitely one for the books.

Mortal Kombat XI will be launching on April 23.

Obsidian Reveals The Outer Worlds and It Looks Awesome

Biggest Surprises From The Game Awards 2018

In a time that a new polarizing Fallout game is out and in the wild, you can leave it up to the original creators of the series to announce a brand new AAA RPG that will make you forget all about Fallout 76s’ many issues and controversies.

During The Game Awards, Obsidian revealed The Outer Worlds, a sci-fi first-person shooter RPG being published by 2K Games’ Private Division, which is a subsidiary of 2K games that is meant to help bring developer-driven titles to fruition.

With RPG elements, player choice, and the living world that gives us retro aesthetic feels reminds us of a game that draws influences from the best of the best such as Borderlands, Mass Effect, and of course, Fallout. There won’t be any romance in The Outer Worlds, but you can use a Shrink Ray on enemies, so that’s cool.

The Outer Worlds is set to launch in 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
