Red Dead Redemption 2 Ships an Astounding 17 Million Copies in Eight Days, Topping First Game’s Lifetime Sales

We all knew Red Dead Redemption 2 was going to be a huge success, but maybe not this big of a success. Take-Two Games released a new financial report today where they announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 has officially shipped a whopping 17 million units in its first eight days. This number even eclipses the lifetime sales of the first Red Dead Redemption on all platforms to date.

Keep in mind that these are sell-in numbers, not sell-through numbers meaning Rockstar has shipped 17 million copies of the game to retailers, and not necessarily sold 17 million to consumers. It’s impressive regardless.

Because of this strong performance, Take-Two Games has raised their financial outlook for 2019. Red Dead Redemption 2 also recently set a record for the second biggest opening launch in entertainment history, making roughly $750 million within its first three days of release, just behind Grand Theft Auto V with $1 billion in three days.

This momentum has clearly kept going leading to even stronger sales, and with the holidays right around the corner it’ll be interesting to see how Red Dead Redemption 2 fares, especially with other big games like Battlefield V and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate coming out.

It’s still unlikely that Red Dead Redemption 2 will ever reach the heights of GTA V, which has sold nearly 100 million copies becoming one of the highest-grossing entertainment properties of all time. Still, with Red Dead Online being implemented sometime this month, there’s still momentum to be had.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently available on PS4 and Xbox One. For even more on the game, check out five changes that could make Red Dead Redemption 2 nearly perfect, or see whether we think it or The Witcher 3 is the better open world game.
