How to Get Atoms and What They’re Used For in Fallout 76
Fallout 76 brings some big changes to the post-apocalyptic franchise, changing from a single-player RPG to a multiplayer shared world RPG. Of course with a change like this even more changes trickle down to the game’s core systems. While Fallout 76 still uses the same scavenging, shooting, and base building you know and love, a few new elements are introduced, like Atoms, an in-game currency that can be used in the game’s shop. Here’s how to get Atoms and what they’re used for in Fallout 76.
How to Get Them
These can be gained a variety of ways in Fallout 76, through Challenges. There are a ton of different challenges to complete, from leveling up to cooking a meal. You can check all challenges in Fallout 76 by opening the map with the options button or menu button, then using L1/LB to tab over into the Menu and select Challenges.
The amount of them you’ll earn for each challenge is indicated by a little nuclear symbol and number, although it should be noted that not every challenge will give you any, as some will instead reward you with Perk Cards.
Of course, outside of completing these in-game challenges you can also spend your hard-earned money on them. We don’t have exact pricing on them yet, but you will be able to spend real money on the currency when the game fully launches.
Here’s a quick list of some of the challenges we know of so far, as well as how many atoms you get:
- Claim a Workshop – 20
- Collect Caps (10) – 20
- Collect Caps (50) – 20

What They’re Used For
Bethesda has been quick to state that the only thing you’ll be able to purchase in Fallout 76’s store is cosmetic items, and there aren’t any gameplay-related microtransactions.
By heading over to the main menu and selecting the Atomic Shop, you can purchase a wealth of different outfits, skins, accessories, and more. This can include new player icons, new items for your base camp, and new emotes and poses for photo mode.
How to Spend Atoms
To spend your these bad boys, simply head over to the Atomic Shop from the main menu, as featured above, where you’ll see a bunch of different categories. Navigate to the one you want and then find an item that fits your fancy.
Select the item you want to purchase with X or A then select the purchase option, provided you have enough of this currency, of course. If you don’t you can always knock out a few more challenges or hit triangle/Y on the store page to purchase more with real money.
