7 Anime like That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime if You’re Looking for Something Similar

While the reincarnation and Isekai (different world) genres certainly aren’t anything new in anime, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is doing a lot of fun things with it. As the title suggests, the show tells the story of a man, Satoru Mikami, who is reincarnated as a slime in an alternate world under the name Rimuru Tempest.

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Mysterious new beginnings are always interesting, as they add intrigue alongside the action.

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash centers around a group of people who have no memory of where they came from or how they got there.

It isn’t long before the group figures out they are in a fantastical world of adventure, known as Grimgar.

In order to survive Grimgar, they must work together and figure out what is going on. Along the way, they are required to choose a guild, class, and special abilities.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because it mirrors the video game like reincarnation concept that That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is exploring as well.

The Devil Is a Part-Timer!

Unlike most shows on this list, The Devil Is a Part-Timer! doesn’t focus on video game-like rules and worlds. Instead, the show’s characters are transported, via magic, to a parallel world that doesn’t know or use magic: Earth.

Similar to Satoru Mikami’s transition into becoming Rimuru, the Devil himself, Satan, changes a lot when he is transported to Earth. Under the name Sadao Maō, the former personification of evil is now intent on working hard as a part-time manager at a fast food joint, forming relationships and even helping people along the way.

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! is a perfect show for anime fans who love subverting expectation, as the definition of evil becomes a normal, nice guy.

No Game No Life

No Game No life continues the deep dive into the Isekai genre that makes up a lot of this list, as the title would suggest.

In this sci-fi tale, reclusive step-siblings Sora and Shiro are challenged by a god from another reality, Tet. If the two can beat him at chess, they can live in a world that centers around games, known as Disboard.

What sets No Game No Life apart from a lot of the other shows on this list are the interesting rules that the inhabitants have to follow in this reality. A law known as the Ten Pledges prevents citizens from harming each other. Instead of fights, players must settle their differences by gambling and discretely cheating in games.

The differences in this anime won’t be enough to dissuade That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime fans from watching it, but will certainly add enough variety to merit seeing.

The Saga of Tanya the Evil

World War I and II are certainly not time periods that most people would choose to be reborn into, especially if you’re simply a Japanese salaryman.

After failing to believe a self-righteous entity is truly a god, the unnamed salesmen is condemned and reborn into a harsh, war-driven world. Instead of a man, he becomes Tanya Degurechaff: a mage with a gift for the magic that flows through this world.

Comparing Tempest and Tanya von Degurechaff’s past and present lives are interesting, as they feature key similarities and differences. Where Rimuru is more reserved and kind in both lives, Tanya is stubborn and cold-hearted.

Considering the climate both former Japanese businessman now find themselves in, it is probably a good thing that each of them have those specific traits. Contrasting their personalities and stories is a perfect through-line for anime fans to enjoy both series.

How Not To Summon A Demon Lord

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Takuma Sakamoto is known as the Demon Lord Diablo in his favorite MMORPG, Cross Reverie. But just because he is a Demon Lord in a video game, doesn’t mean he is a bad person in real life. That is until Cross Reverie becomes real life.

Sakamoto is mysteriously summoned into the game’s reality one day by two in-game characters, the pantherian Rem and the elf Shera. The two attempt to make Diablo their servant, but fail, as the demon knows the perfect counter to their spell. Instead, they become his servants, as Takuma decides to role-play this situation.

Along the way, Takuma comes to learn a lot about the world and the characters who summoned him. How Not To Summon A Demon Lord is a lot more than a catchy title and attractive characters and is definitely worth a watch.

Another World With My Smartphone

Have you ever wondered if God was real? Well, 15-year-old Touya Mochizuki certainly doesn’t anymore, as the omnipotent being accidentally killed him.

While he may not necessarily have been as down on his luck as Satoru Mikami, Mochizuki still draws the short end of the stick, as the events that lead to his reincarnation weren’t his fault. Just like Rimuru though, it seems that it all turns out for the best, as things are much better for the teenager in this fantasy world.

Thanks to being able to bring a smartphone from Earth with him, Mochizuki is able to befriend many high ranking people and travel on important quests.

Another World With My Smartphone is another unique second chance at life anime that you’ll likely dig.

Overlord I & II

Video games are always great escapes from the real world, letting you live out plenty of fantasy that is simply impossible in reality. But what happens when fiction turns into actuality?

The Overlord series explores this concept, as a user, Momonga, decides to stay in his favorite virtual reality game, Yggdrasil, despite the fact that it is being shut down. Nothing happens when he and his powerful wizard, Ainz Ooal Gown, decide to stay in the game…at least not at first.

Similar to Rimuru’s growth in Reincarnated as a Slime, it’s interesting to watch Momonga come to understand the new world he inhabits, as NPC’s begin to exhibit character traits of there own.
