How to Unlock & Use Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Recommended Videos

The world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is huge, and the various different missions you’ll embark on with your gang, or side activities you can do to fill your spare time will see you traveling all over. While your horse is a great means of getting around quickly, sometimes it can still take up precious time getting from one side of the map to the other. As such, the ability to fast travel is something you’re going to want to make the most of whenever you can. Here’s how to unlock fast travel, how to use fast travel, and all the different ways you can get about a little bit quicker in Red Dead Redemption 2.

How to Unlock Fast Travel

The first thing you’ll need to do is unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. Unlike some games, you cannot simply select somewhere on your map, press a button, and be transported there with some divine powers.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is all about giving a realistic feel to its fast travel system. You can use Stagecoaches to move between towns and locales quickly. However, it’s worth noting that before you can get a Stagecoach to somewhere else, you’ll need to have visited it already.

As such, you may find that the Stagecoach system is locked for the opening few hours in the game, while you find your feet and start exploring the different towns.

This isn’t the only method you can use to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. There are other options that you can unlock or use as your progress through the game, and we’ve detailed all of those below. During your opening few hours with the game, though, the Stagecoach system is likely going to be your best bet.

How to Use Stagecoach Fast Travel

Stagecoaches can often be found just outside of the train stations in Red Dead Redemption 2. We’ve included an image below of the sign you’ll want to look out for, as well as what the one in Valentine looks like. The Valentine stagecoach station is right outside the train station and post office, which can be found towards the south of the town.

When you see this sign, you’ll then went to press and hold Triangle to use the ‘Take a Ride’ option. You can then see the different towns you’ve previously visited, as well as how much it’ll set you back to travel there by stagecoach.

Once you’ve selected where you want to fast travel to in Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll then be given a lovely little view of the blue skies of the wild west, as the game loads you into your desired location. Arthur will then hop off the Stagecoach, and you’ll have successfully used one element of the fast travel system in Red Dead Redemption 2.

There are other ways to get around quickly, however, so we’ll continue to list these below.

How to Fast Travel on the Train in Red Dead Redemption 2

While the Stagecoach system requires you to have visited a location already for you to be able to fast travel there, you can use trains to get to the main places in Red Dead Redemption 2 quickly and in style. You can’t just hop on a train though… well, not if you want to remain a lawful citizen and keep your bounty low. You’ll need to buy a ticket in order to fast travel using the trains. To do this, you’re going to need to head to the Post Office. This is often located right by the train station in a town, and is marked with an envelope icon on your map.

Head inside, and use L2 to interact with the NPC behind the bars. You can then choose to buy a train ticket, and you’ll be provided a list of the different locations and how much they cost. Select one, and you’ll be given a lovely view of the train cruising across the countryside, taking you to your desired destination. This is the best way to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 during the early stages of the game if you’ve yet to visit locations and need to for a mission.

Plus, when we used the train to fast travel, we found our horse was hitched at the nearby hitching post at our destination, so that’s a winner, too!

Even outside of the train and stagecoach methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2, you have other options.

Fast Travel Upgrade for Your Camp

You can purchase an upgrade for Arthur’s lodgings at camp to unlock fast travel. However, it’s worth noting that this also requires you to purchase the Dutch upgrade first, which comes in at a hefty $220. Make sure your camp can afford this hefty expenditure before splashing your cash on it.

Once you’ve purchased the upgrades for both Dutch and Arthur’s lodgings, you’ll then see a little map near Arthur’s bed which enables him to fast travel to any major location free of charge. This is essentially the best way to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2, though it will cost you a fair amount, meaning you likely won’t unlock it until later on in your adventure.

And there you have absolutely everything there is to know about fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. Still got some questions? Don’t be shy, sound off in the comments below and we’ll do our best to get back to you.
