PS4 Exclusive Dreams’ Player-Created Levels Will Have Varying Frame Rates

Media Molecule’s Dreams will allow players to experience being in the shoes of a game developer, as they will be given control over frame rate optimization for their custom created levels.

In a rapid-fire interview with GameInformer, Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans said Dreams will try to run player-created levels as smoothly as it can, or up to 60 FPS. However, cramming more assets will result in lower frame rates. It will also leverage the powerful hardware of the PS4 Pro to run more levels smoothly.

“The game runs as fast as it can,” said Evans. “If you have Pro, more of the Dreams will run on 60. It goes as quick as it can. If it can hit 60 it will. If your game is full of amazing artwork it will probably run at 30. If you put too much amazing artwork it will probably go lower than 30 and then everyone will downvote your level and it will disappear.”

Evans adds that players can’t cram levels with too much content to crash one’s PS4.

Alex also shared other essential information in the interview. This includes lack of multiplayer at launch, a Psychonauts-inspired story campaign, player leveling and more. Players can also create any type of gaming genre, except for MMOs.

Media Molecule’s upcoming play, create, and share title has yet to receive a release date, though fans can look forward to play Dreams via a beta this 2018.
