If you’re here, you’re probably already aware that we’re gonna be spoiling all major plot events in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. If you don’t want to be spoiled, turn back now. Also, for the purposes of this Assassin’s Creed Odyssey story summary, we’ll be referring to the main hero as Kassandra, since we spent the bulk of our time with her.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Story Summary
Life as a Misthios
As a child, Kassandra was raised to become a strong soldier of Sparta. Her father, Nikolaos, was a Spartan general, and she had a baby brother named Alexios. Her parents were loving and caring, and Kassandra was determined to make her father proud. One important plot point to note here is that Kassandra’s mother, Myrinne, was also the daughter of Leonidas.
If you know your Greek mythology, you’ll recognize Leonidas as the legendary general who fought back the Persians with only 300 Spartan soldiers. After he passed, Leonidas’ broken spear passed on to Myrinne’s family.
However, Kassandra’s childhood life wasn’t all sunshine and roses. After hearing of a prophecy from the Oracle of Delphi, Nikolaos was told that he had to sacrifice his baby son Alexios on the top of Mount Taygetos. Myrinne and Kassandra begged him not to go through with the sacrifice.
While trying to save her brother from being dropped from the mountain, Kassandra assaulted the priest holding Alexios, and both the priest and Alexios ended up falling off the mountain. As punishment for her crime, Nikolaos was forced to throw Kassandra off the mountain as well, and both siblings were presumed dead.
Thankfully, Kassandra survived the fall and got washed up on the shores of Kephallonia, where a man named Markos took her in. As Kassandra grew up, she also got acquainted with a young girl named Phoibe.
During this time, Kassandra carved out a life for herself as a Misthios, or a mercenary and person for hire in Ancient Greece. After Markos gets into trouble with a hooligan known as the Cyclops, Kassandra bails him out. She also manages to rescue a sailor named Barnabas from the Cyclops.
Barnabas then offers his ship and crew to her, allowing her to sail the seas. Soon after, she’s approached by a man named Elpenor, who hires her to kill a Spartan general known as the Wolf.
Kassandra accepts the job, and bids farewell to Markos and Phoibe before leaving. On the ship, she reveals to Barnabas that the Wolf is actually her father, Nikolaos.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Story Summary
Expanding to the Rest of Greece
Upon arriving at Megaris, Kassandra catches a glimpse of Nikolaos, and is quickly greeted by Stentor, his adopted son. She volunteers to fight for Sparta in the upcoming conquest battle, and helps to weaken Athens’ hold on the region before then. After defeating the nation leader, she’s granted a private audience with Nikolaos himself.
When they meet, Kassandra has many questions for him. Nikolaos tells her that he isn’t actually her biological father, and that she should seek out Myrinne, who will have answers for her. At this point, the player can choose to either kill Nikolaos, or let him go.
Regardless of what you decide, Kassandra will take Nikolaos’ helmet and sail to Phokis to meet Elpenor. Along the way, Barnabas suggests that she should meet with the Oracle of Delphi to see what her future holds. Kassandra still feels resentful towards the Oracle for causing the destruction of her family, but she agrees to keep it in consideration.
When she meets Elpenor in Phokis, she claims her reward, but quickly finds out that Elpenor is up to no good, and is part of an organization called the Cult of Kosmos. He disappears, but she is able to track him down and kill him.
Kassandra also meets the Oracle of Delphi, and later goes to her private residence to demand more concrete answers about the Cult and what happened to her family. She finds out that the Oracle was actually a puppet for the Cult of Kosmos, and the Cultists have been using her to control the flow of war, and what she says to the public.
Along the way, Barnabas also introduces Kassandra to Herodotos, who serves as an advisor to Perikles, the democratic leader of Attika.
Herodotos is able to give her information about the Cult of Kosmos. Using the cloak and mask she took off Elpenor’s body, Kassandra decides to infiltrate the Cult headquarters and find out what they’re up to. During the meeting, she learns that the Cult has a new leader named Deimos, who rose through the ranks quickly. He’s their most powerful warrior, but the Cult plans to make use of him and hunt down his mother.
Deimos shows up to the meeting soon after, with the news that one of their members (Elpenor) has been killed, and that there’s at traitor among them. With a mysterious pyramid artifact, Deimos is able to see the past of each member to determine who is the traitor. When it’s Kassandra’s turn, she and Deimos interact with the artifact, and she’s able to see Deimos’ past as well.
She then learns that Deimos is actually Alexios, and he had survived Mount Taygetos after all. Deimos looks at her in disbelief, and covers up for her by grabbing another Cultist and claiming that they’re the traitor before killing them viciously.
Kassandra manages to escape unscathed, and she resolves to find Myrinne quickly, as the Cult is hunting her. Herodotos advises her to go to Perikles and warn him of the Cult. Perikles may also be able to provide info on where Myrinne is.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Story Summary
Onwards to Attika and Beyond
In Attika, Perikles no longer has the overwhelming support of the people. His rival, Kleon, is able to rally the masses and convince them that they need to take decisive action against the Spartans. After gaining Perikles’ trust, Kassandra is able to attend his symposium, and hopefully find out more about her mother from the people there.
At the symposium, she also meets Phoibe, who had snuck onboard a ship out of Kephallonia to Attika. She came into the employ of Aspasia, Perikles’ most trusted advisor. Speaking to the people at the symposium, Kassandra gets a few leads on her mother’s whereabouts. She also meets Aspasia, who gives her a few other leads to chase.
While chasing down these leads, Kassandra learns that her mother had fled Sparta after the events of Mount Taygetos, and that she was told that both her children were dead. She also meets a Spartan warrior named Brasidas in Korinth, who promises to work with her again if she ever goes back to Sparta.
After exhausting all possible leads, Kassandra finally learns that Myrinne is in Naxos, where she’s working with the Spartans as leader of the region. Along the way, she also has another run-in with Deimos, who seems to have been brainwashed by the Cult.
Before she can find her mother, though, Kassandra is called back to Attika, where a plague has struck. Perikles falls gravely ill, and Kleon continues to rise to power. She also finds out that Aspasia had sent Phoibe out on a task, but is taking too long to return.
When Kassandra goes to find her, it’s too late, and she sees that Phoibe has been murdered by Cultists. Before leaving to find her mother, Kassandra asks Sokrates and Hippokrates to give Phoibe a proper burial.
Upon reaching Naxos, the two have a tearful reunion, and Kassandra offers to help Myrinne protect Naxos before they can go after the Cult and Deimos. After all that’s done, Myrinne also gives Kassandra a bit more information about her real father, and tells her to go to Thera for more answers. When she’s ready, Myrinne tells Kassandra to meet her in Sparta, where they’ll continue to hunt down the Cult.
At Thera, Kassandra finds a large mysterious door that leads her to the entrance of the underground city, Atlantis. There, she finds Pythagoras, who has been kept alive so many years by the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus.
Pythagoras tells her that those of their bloodline are destined to seal Atlantis and protect it from the Cult. He then tasks her with retrieving four artifacts from around the world in order to seal it.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Story Summary
Returning to Sparta
Kassandra finally makes her way to Sparta, where she meets Myrinne and Brasidas. In order to reclaim their old house and citizenship, Kassandra is given two tasks to complete by the two Spartan kings, Archidamos and Pausanias.
After winning the Olympics for Sparta, Kassandra moves on to Boeotia to take back that region from the Athenians. She also meets Stentor once again, who’s furious at her for Nikolaos’ death. Whether you killed him or not, Stentor will assume that you did anyway.
If you didn’t kill Nikolaos, he will show up Boeotia, and you can convince him to go to Stentor, and mentor him in becoming a good general.
After accomplishing both tasks, Kassandra meets up with Brasidas and Myrinne to hunt down another Cultist. When all that’s done, they return to Sparta. During her journey, Kassandra had also learned that one of the Spartan kings was a Cultist. They eventually manage to deduce that Pausanias was the traitor. Kassandra kills Pausanias, and Archidamos agrees to give her and Myrinne their land back.
However, the war isn’t over yet. Brasidas informs Kassandra that there’s another conquest battle brewing, and Deimos himself is on the battlefield. During the battle itself, Kassandra faces Deimos, and he’s crushed by a tree.
The player then has the option to either run away or try to help him. Regardless of what you choose, Kassandra will be captured and brought back to Attika, where Kleon is now in control.
When she’s imprisoned, Deimos will speak to her, and players will have the chance to try to convince him that the Cult is just using him. Kleon shows up soon after, and he’s revealed to be yet another Cultist. Before long, Barnabas manages to break Kassandra out of prison. Together with Alkibiades, Sokrates, and Hippokrates, they try to devise a plan to discredit Kleon in the eyes of the masses so that they can weaken him and oust him from power.
After a series of devious schemes, Kleon finally flees, and Brasidas tells Kassandra to meet him in Makedonia, where they’ll finally defeat him in battle. After a long and drawn out conflict, Kassandra finally comes face to face with Kleon, and kills him.
Back in Sparta, Kassandra meets up with Myrinne again. She says that she wants to go up to Mount Taygetos and finally face the past she’s been running from all her life. At the mountain, they find Deimos waiting for them. Depending on your actions in the game, you can either convince Deimos to leave the Cult, or fight him in battle.
Regardless of what happens in the end, Kassandra will gain the final clue to the leader of the Cult of Kosmos. She then resolves to hunt down the rest of the Cultists and destroy them.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Story Summary
Atlantis and the Cult of Kosmos
Even though Kassandra has had her personal confrontation with Deimos, the story isn’t quite over yet. After collecting all four artifacts, Kassandra is able to return to Atlantis to seal it. Upon inserting the artifacts, she also meets Aletheia, the Isu AI. Aletheia congratulates Kassandra for making it this far, and also tells Pythagoras to pass the Staff on to her. She also seems to address Layla, or the player directly, and tells her that she’ll be able to fix the mistakes of the past simply by running another simulation.
Pythagoras hands the Staff over to Kassandra, and he finally passes away. Back in the modern day, Layla manages to find Atlantis, and she even meets Kassandra in person, who’s been kept alive by the Staff for so many centuries. Kassandra tells Layla that balance needs to be restored to the world. Layla says that she used to be on the side of order, when she fought for the Templars. But now, she fights for freedom and choice. Convinced that Layla will be able to restore balance, she hands the Staff over, but not before asking her to destroy it after her job is done. Kassandra then passes away.
Back in Ancient Greece, we also find out more about the balance between order and chaos when Kassandra hunts down the Cult leader, who’s revealed to be Aspasia. Back at the Cult’s hideout, Kassandra interacts with the pyramid artifact and sees a vision from Pythagoras. He tells her that the world needs to be held together by a delicate balance between order and chaos. The Cult of Kosmos was the very embodiment of chaos. By destroying it, they had paved the way for supreme order to take over, and that’s how the Templar Order was born. Because of this, the perpetual war between the Assassins and the Templars began, kickstarting the events of the other Assassin’s Creed games.
Aspasia then shows up at the hideout and explains that all the Cult wanted was a clean slate for Greece. However, when Deimos joined their ranks, the Cult’s vision was skewed, and Aspasia began to lose control of the organization. She then decided to make use of Kassandra in a way that would allow the Cult to be destroyed. Aspasia also tells Kassandra that the pyramid had given her a vision as well. After Kassandra destroys the pyramid, Greece would then be ruled by a wise philosopher king. This would end the war between Athens and Sparta, and there would be no more sides to choose.
Kassandra agrees to go with Aspasia’s plan. She then destroys the pyramid. While doing so, she hears Myrinne’s voice telling her that a storm is coming. Before leaving, Kassandra proclaims that she can weather any storm.
