Dismantle Weapons, Don’t Sell Them
Before you get started in Ubisoft‘s latest action-adventure game, we’ve gathered some Assassin’s Creed Odyssey tips and tricks for beginners for you.
As you play through Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you’ll pick up tons of weapons and armor, and it can be tempting to sell them away for quick cash. However, I strongly advise against doing that, as they can be dismantled for more useful resources. As you complete main and side quests, and take down a bunch of enemies, you’ll be getting tons of money anyway. So unless you’re really broke, it’s better to dismantle your gear from the game menu for resources.
These are extremely useful for upgrading gear in the future, as well as your ship. Resources are much harder to come by in the game than money, so you’ll be saving yourself a lot of time by just getting free resources from dismantling.

Upgrade Your Favorite Outdated Gear
Speaking of upgrading gear, the nice thing about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is that you can level up your gear to keep up with your current character level. The blacksmith will provide this service for a price, and you’ll also need resources for the process, which is why you should dismantle when you can. The upgrading process is useful in that it effectively raises a piece of low-level gear to your current character level, which means that you’ll get better attack and defense stats.
That said, one of our biggest Assassin’s Creed Odyssey beginner tips is to upgrade with care. I recommend only upgrading purple or yellow Epic and Legendary items. These pieces of equipment come with three and four engraving slots respectively, and it’s a lot more cost-effective to upgrade these over blue items.

Main Quests Scale With Your Level
One of the key Assassin’s Creed Odyssey beginner tips I can impart to new players is that you shouldn’t worry too much about completing every single side quest before doing story stuff.
As your character level goes up, the recommended level for your main missions go up as well. For instance, the recommended level for a main quest might be 24. If your level goes higher than that from side quest completion, the main quest level will increase too. This means that you can’t really over-level for story missions.
With that in mind, it’s probably best to just do enough side quests to hit the next main quest level, then get that done immediately. You can always come back to your leftover side quests afterwards.

Be Careful With Mercenaries
Mercenaries are one of the new additions in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and they’re pretty fun to fight. Until you get completely overwhelmed, that is. If you’re caught committing “reprehensible acts” in the game world, you’ll get a bounty placed on your head. Once your bounty reaches tier 1, you’ll have a mercenary actively trying to hunt you down. As your bounty reaches the other tiers, more mercenaries will be looking for you. That said, here’s one of the more important Assassin’s Creed Odyssey beginner tips to remember.
For the most part, fighting mercenaries is always a good thing. They have a much higher chance of dropping good gear, and as you progress through the mercenary tiers, you’ll get better prices at the blacksmith too. However, it’s generally not a good idea to be caught in an open fight when you have a high bounty. For instance, if you get spotted at a fort, all active mercenaries will converge on your location. You’ll either be caught in a drawn-out fight, or get slaughtered immediately.
To avoid situations like these, it might be worth clearing your bounty whenever it gets too high. Just open up your map, then hold down the triangle button to pay it off quickly.

Hunt Down Cultists
Aside from mercenaries, Cultists are another new enemy type that are definitely worth tracking down whenever you have time. Cultists drop Legendary gear, which makes this one of the best Assassin’s Creed Odyssey beginner tips we have for you. Once you’ve progressed far enough into the story, you’ll get a new Cultists tab on your menu. From here, you can track them down by piecing clues together.
Most of the main story quests in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will lead you to more Cultists, but some are locked behind side quests. Whenever you have time, check the Cultists tab, and hover over the unknown icons. You’ll see the identity clues you have on them so far.
Generally, you’ll get a hint as to which region they’re currently in, and what they’re doing at the moment. Head to that general area and start looking around. If you’re in the right place, the game will let you know that there’s a Cultist clue nearby, and you can try to locate it with Ikaros. Clues are usually found in chests, or looted from a dead body.
