Nintendo Switch Clears Five Million Units Sold in Japan

Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch has passed yet another sales milestone according to the most recent Famitsu sales date, as the little console has now sold over five million units in Japan. Back in July, it was reported that the console had sold nearly 20 million units worldwide, and this new development in Japan most likely puts the Switch above that number now.

In its first year at retail in Japan, the Switch sold three times what the PS4 did in the same time frame, and that gap seems to be widening even more. It’s certainly no small feat for the system which has two humongous releases on the way later this year with Pokemon Let’s Go and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Famitsu data also revealed the top five best-selling Switch games in Japan, and it should come as no surprise that Splatoon 2 sits easily atop the list. Here’s the top five.

  • Splatoon 2 – 2,621,928 units sold
  • Super Mario Odyssey – 1,788,228 units sold
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe  – 1,738,502 units sold
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 1,065,780 units sold
  • Kirby: Star Allies – 591,721 units sold

In other Nintendo news, a brand new Nintendo Direct will be taking place on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 3pm P.T. Nintendo says the presentation will be 35-minutes long and focus on upcoming releases for the Switch as well as the 3DS.
