While you’re always going to have your favorite party members and characters in Dragon Quest XI, sometimes, a particular enemy or fight may require a switch-up of your tactics. More often than not, this’ll mean switching your party members in order to ensure you’ve matched your party to counter the strengths of your opponent and exploit their weaknesses. Here’s what you need to know to switch party members during combat in Dragon Quest XI.

If you’re just about to start combat in Dragon Quest XI, simply select the Line-Up option instead of choosing Fight. This will enable you to swap out characters and make any other tactical changes you want to regarding them.

For those times when things are going south during combat in Dragon Quest XI, it is still possible to switch party members. In order to do this, you’ll need to press Triangle on your PS4 controller to bring up the tactics menu.

Once you’ve done this, you should seem the familiar Line-Up option that was available at the start of the fight. Simply select this and you can swap out a character.

What is important to remember, however, is that if you switch party members during combat in Dragon Quest XI, that will count as a turn. As such, make sure there’s nothing else you need to do before switching out party members, such as healing another character, otherwise you may be setting yourself up for failure. Unless, of course, you’re switching out a character close to being taken out of the fight. In that case, switch away!
