Do the Training Missions First
If you’re new to Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, or the Monster Hunter series overall, you should probably take the time to do the training quests when you first get started. These are essentially short tutorial missions that teach you the core basics of the game, and they can be very helpful. These missions aren’t exactly exciting, and a lot of them are pretty slow-moving and boring, but stick with it; they’ll teach you all you need to know about the different gathering nodes found across the map, how to cook your raw meat, and how to hunt and capture a monster.
The training quests also reward you with a fair bit of zenny, which you can put towards new equipment and upgrades later on in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, so it’s not a total waste of time.

Experiment With the Hunter Styles and Arts
One of the cool things about Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is that you can play around with various styles and arts, which add a lot more depth to the game’s combat beyond just pressing two buttons to hit a monster. Different hunter styles give you access to different arts and abilities you can use in battle, and you should take the time to play around with them and see which one suits your play style best.
The brand new Valor style, for instance, revolves around you sheathing your weapon and holding down a button to enter a special stance that allows you to tank certain attacks. It’s a little slow, but can be helpful for continuing a combo if you like building around a tank play style.
The new Alchemy style is also a pretty fun one to experiment with, and it makes it easier for you to synthesize items during battle. For beginners, we recommend starting out with the Guild or Striker styles as those feel more well-rounded and newbie-friendly.

Get Your Palico ASAP
As soon as you gain control of your character in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, head straight to the Palico Ranch to the right side of the village and get your Palico immediately. This is a cat companion who will accompany you on your hunts in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, and they’ll even gather materials and fight alongside you. Head to the Ranch and talk to the Meowstress, and you’ll be able to create your first Palico. After that, you can recruit other Palicoes, and bring up to two of them with you on a mission. Don’t forget to come back to the Ranch every now and then to level your Palicoes up and teach them a few new skills at the board.
If the gameplay starts to get a little repetitive for you in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, consider playing in Prowler Mode instead. This can be activated from the board at the Palico Ranch, and allows you to play as a Palico instead of a human hunter. While your damage output will be a little lower, and you won’t be able to use styles or arts, Palicoes have the benefit of being able to mine for resources without having to worry about crafting gear like pickaxes and bug nets. We recommend playing in Prowler Mode whenever you get a gathering quest; it’s much more efficient.

Don’t Rush Through the New Quests
Last, but certainly not least, while it can be tempting to quickly blow through all of your new quests as they unlock in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, we strongly recommend repeating quests to farm for materials and resources. Your hunter doesn’t level up like your Palico does, and the only way you can get stronger is if you forge new equipment or upgrade your weapons. This is where the monster parts come in.
For instance, the first major quest tasks you with hunting a Great Maccao. From this encounter alone, you might get enough parts to craft a single piece of armor. What you want to do is repeat that quest until you’re able to get enough parts to craft the full armor set, giving you a great boost to defense. You don’t have to do this for all hunting quests, of course, but check back with the smithy regularly to see the stat bonuses for each armor set, and then farm them accordingly.
