Devolver Digital and Nomada Studio have announced Gris, a stunning looking new 2D platformer with a bright watercolor aesthetic, coming to Switch and PC sometime in 2018. An announcement trailer for the game reveals a surreal Journey-like world, with a piano track backing the visuals, setting an emotional tone.

It sounds like the game will be a narrative-focused experience, and while there will be puzzles and skill-based challenges, the focus will be on the story and how Gris grows and evolves as a person. You can take a look at the reveal trailer down below, and here’s the official description of the game via Devolver Digital.

“Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life. Her journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which grants new abilities to better navigate her faded reality. As the story unfolds, Gris will grow emotionally and see her world in a different way, revealing new paths to explore using her new abilities. GRIS is a serene and evocative experience, free of danger, frustration or death.

Players will explore a meticulous designed world brought to life with delicate art, detailed animation, and an elegant original score. Through the game light puzzles, platforming sequences, and optional skill-based challenges will reveal themselves as more of Gris’s world becomes accessible.”

Nomada Studio is a fairly new developer, and this will be the very first game developed by the studio. The studio is founded by Adrian Cuevas and Roger Mendoza, and Gris is using the art style and talents of the artist Conrad Roset. Here’s a description of the studio from their official website, which recently went live.

“Based in Barcelona, Nomada Studio is composed of experienced developers and artists outside of video games with disciplines in illustration, painting, and graphic design. Featuring art from noted artist Conrad Roset and the music of Berlinist, GRIS is their debut title as a team.”

There’s currently no exact release date for Gris, but the game will be arriving sometime in 2018 on PC and Nintendo Switch. We’ll make sure to update you once more details are announced.
