So far, DONTNOD Entertainment has been pretty tight-lipped about what we can expect from the story in Life Is Strange 2. Aside from a very short teaser trailer showing off the game’s title, we don’t know much else at all. However, the company also released The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit for free, and as a lead-in to the next chapter in Life Is Strange, there are quite a few clues we can pick up from the two-hour journey.
Be warned that this article contains spoilers for The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit and Life Is Strange.
The Reynolds Boy Is the Protagonist
Let’s start with the big one. At the end of Captain Spirit, Chris falls off the treehouse, but right before he hits the ground, he levitates. After that, we see him share a look with one of the boys from the Reynolds household. Now, it’s entirely possible that Chris could have discovered his own superpowers right at that moment in time. However, it’s also worth noting that the Reynolds boy looked completely serene when he witnessed the whole situation. If he was that unfazed by the ordeal, it stands to reason that the boy was the one who saved Chris.
We also know that Chris isn’t going to be the main protagonist in Life Is Strange 2. While he is going to be a key character in the story, players will take control of someone else instead. If the Reynolds boy is the one with the superpower, then him being the main protagonist seems like the most plausible outcome.
Something’s Up With the Reynolds Household
Okay so, even if the Reynolds boy ends up being our main character in Life Is Strange 2, there’s still something really fishy going on with that family. During the events of Captain Spirit, Chris can give them a call over the phone. If you call them while Charles is still awake, Mrs Reynolds will answer and Chris will share his plans for the day. However, if you call them while Charles is asleep, you’ll hear some creepy, heavy breathing noises instead.
First off, it’s possible that we’re just hearing snoring noises. But if that’s the case, who picked up the phone and why? This is pretty much the only ‘strange’ encounter we get in Captain Spirit, and it could very well be a hint towards something more sinister that’s going on.
Parallels Between Chris and Chloe
Life Is Strange has a weird thing for parents who are either dead or really shitty. We have dead William, crappy Mr Amber, and now we have Chris’ dead mom and his abusive dad Charles. One of the most interesting things about Chris is the number of similarities he shares with Chloe Price. Both lost a parent in a fatal car accident, and both dead parents were perceived as the ‘perfect’ adult figures who could’ve really made a difference in their lives growing up.
Not only that, if we assume that the Reynolds boy saved Chris from the fall, both Chris and Chloe would’ve been saved from a terrible situation from a distant friend with superpowers. The similarities are very blatant and they’re hard to ignore, especially if Chris ends up being one half of a possible dynamic duo in Life Is Strange 2.
However, Chris also deviates from Chloe in some interesting ways. For one, he embraces his superhero person and tries to be the best son he can be. Unlike Chloe, who obviously finds more fun in being a renegade or rebel who does things on her own terms. Chris shies away from smoking (even if you steal the cigarette) while Chloe is a regular puffer, and Chris hates swearing while Chloe is hella okay with cursing like a sailor.
At first glance, the similarities between Chris and Chloe feel a little lazy. However, it’s also possible that Chris’ story could just be a red herring. They share too many things in common, and Life Is Strange 2 would certainly feel like it’s retreading a lot of old ground if we end up just getting another character with a reskinned tragic backstory.
The Backpack and the Polaroid
Finally, we come back to the original Life Is Strange 2 teaser trailer. The video is short, but it gives us a close up look at a worn out backpack. Not only that, the game logo itself still features a polaroid photo. We all know that Max carried her Polaroid camera everywhere, which is why the logo makes sense. Could this mean that photographs and instant cameras are still going to be a theme going into Life Is Strange 2?
The backpack is also significant and it could mean a couple of things. First, it’s obvious that players are going to be taking control of yet another troubled youth at school. The backpack’s torn nature could be symbolic of bullying, or it could also be a sign of wear and tear from travel. Honestly, it’s a little difficult to glean any concrete details from the teaser trailer because it’s so short, but we’re inclined to believe that Life Is Strange 2 will feature another school-like setting for our main characters.
