LawBreakers, the class-based multiplayer shooter developed by the now-defunct Boss Key Productions, is now free-to-play on Steam. The change was first noticed by Wario64, while the game originally retailed for $29.99.
The game is multiplayer-only with two teams of five fighting over an objective on maps that contain areas of low gravity. Players could pick between classes with specific loadouts, such as the tank-like Titan and the flanking Assassin, though each side had different characters representing the classes.
LawBreakers launched on Aug. 8 of last year and received favorable reviews, but failed to retain an audience after launch. The game was planned to be free-to-play on launch, but then changed to a $29.99 price after publisher Nexon picked up the project.
Boss Key Productions noted last April that the game did not “generate the funds necessary to keep it sustained” than expected, but a switch to free-to-play would not be easy and take “publishing planning and resources” to implement. The developer released the battle royale game Radical Heights as a Steam Early Access title that same month, and updated it until the studio’s closure in May.
“Four years ago I set out to make a world class video game studio and I hired some of the best talent in the videogame industry,” studio head Cliff Bleszinski wrote in the shutdown statement. “They worked tirelessly to produce quality products and, while we had our ups and downs, I’d like to think we had fun doing it. LawBreakers was a great game that unfortunately failed to gain traction.”
The Steam version of LawBreakers is free-to-play, while the PlayStation 4 version continues to retail at its original price.
