In the last year, the battle royale genre has well and truly taken the gaming world by storm. And while gamers are united in their love for the genre, a clear line has been drawn, splitting the player base right down the middle. On one side, we have military shooter PUBG, the game that popularized battle royale and became the cult hit of 2017. On the other, we have Fortnite, a game which, after a shaky start, adopted the battle royale mantra to become the biggest game in the world, drawing in more views on Twitch and concurrent players than all else. The two are similar in many ways, but there are notable differences between the two. Ultimately, it’s cool to like either, but which one is the right battle royale shooter for you? All you need to do is answer the questions posed on each page (steer clear of the arrows located at the top and bottom) by clicking on the answers down below and see what the right experience is for you. Let’s dive in.

Let’s start off by seeing what hardware you’re working with. Each game is only available on certain platforms so this will be a big factor in your decision. What we want to know is which of these three platforms is your go to.

There’s no judgement here, no PC master race arguments, just preference. With that in mind, which of these is your platform of choice?

PUBG is already available on PC and Xbox One, though it just might make the jump over to PlayStation 4 in the future. Question is, do you mind waiting around for it to arrive? Fortnite has the advantage of being available on nearly every platform under the sun, so it all comes down to your level of patience.

Are you looking to jump into the battle royale phenomenon now, or are you waiting for things to become a little more stable? It’s all up to you but, in moving forward, do you mind waiting a little while for a game to release?

You got Fortnite! Congratulations. While not the first to the current battle royale race, Fortnite is a solid and wonderfully fun shooter with a whole load of character. It’s more arcadey, cartoonish and speedy than PUBG, focusing more on fun than anything else. There’s also the building mechanics too, which make the game altogether more vertical.

The game is free and available on just about every platform including PS4, Xbox One and PC. There’s a tonne of customization options and it benefits from a high level of polish, given its extended time in beta phase. The game doesn’t feature any vehicles but players can move quickly around the map due to the speed of each character. Fortnite is all about having fun, featuring a load of funny emotes which allow you to boogie with your pals or simply show off to your foes.

Fortnite is wacky and colorful, but still tense as a battle royale shooter, and its free admission means that the player-base is only continuing to skyrocket.

What State Do You Want Your Game to Be In?

With the drastic changes in game development that we’ve seen over the last decade, more and more games are releasing in beta and testing stages. Thanks to programmes like Steam Early Access, certain games are given the opportunity to grow over time, while still being in the hands of players. This has led to games of varying levels of quality existing in the same market space. Some don’t mind a little blemish here or there while others prefer to purchase a finished, more polished product.

You got PUBG! Congratulations. The game that kicked off the current wave of battle royale dominance, PUBG is a dynamic military shooter which is not for those with a weak disposition. Stripped back and simple, PUBG relies on its gameplay to carry the experience, going all in on the tense and rewarding experience it champions. So much of every match in PUBG is spent waiting, contemplating your next move. Matches are drawn-out chess games in which one wrong move spells certain death. The huge map can be traversed on foot or by vehicle, an act which is wrought with nail-biting tension and mad dashes for cover.

PUBG is only available on PC, Xbox One and mobile devices and costs money to enter. The graphics and gameplay systems fall more on the realistic side, and customization is subtle. The game is definitely more challenging than its competitors and has a steep learning curve involving countless hours of cowering in bathrooms and accidentally jumping out of cars to your doom.

PUBG is the more tactical experience of the two, requiring all of your attention. All of this is worth it, however, for the chance at getting that all important ‘winner winner chicken dinner’.

What Do Your Clothes Say About You?

Many online gaming experiences allow you to put your own spin on a character’s appearance. It can be an important factor for certain gamers when they are choosing what to play, while for others it is virtually meaningless. Some love nothing more than showing off their fashion prowess to all they lay waste to, spending time and money on looking good. There’s also a huge section of gamers who forgo the customization and opt for default character models or clothing that will give them an edge in battle.

So which type are you?

How Do You Like to Get Around in a Game?

Battlefield 1

When it comes to traversing a large map, certain decisions have to be made. Do you opt for sheer speed and hop into a vehicle which could give away your position on the map? Or do you move on foot, sneaking from cover to cover, edging ever-closer to the goal. Most of the time this comes down to personal preference and your driving ability in certain games. Regardless, whether or not a game has vehicles can make it appealing to a different group of people.

Given the choice though, how do you like to get around in a game?

So, you and your friends have decided that you want to go on an outing, a day filled with activities and forced team building exercises. You’re given two options, paintballing or laser quest. On paper, the two are very similar indeed, but just like battle royale games, there are notable differences. Are you more focused on having fun, running around in a flashy environment with your pals? Or are you looking to strategically flank them while dressed head to toe in cheap, oversized camo?

So what will it be?

How Much Time Do You Have on Your Hands?

As well as being expensive, gaming can be incredibly time consuming. Luckily, there are a bunch of different types of games which require varying amounts of your time. Some online experiences are fast-paced, with matches that are over in under ten minutes, while others can go on for hours. It all comes down to how much time you have to dedicate to each round in each game, and whether you’d rather pick up and play with ease.

There’s also the fact that different games have steeper learning curves to others, meaning you’ll be sinking in a couple of hours at least learning the ropes.

So how much time do you have to put into a battle royale experience?
