The numbers are staggering, but what’s particularly interesting are the different revenue trajectories for each game since launch. The Witcher 2, for example, generated four times the revenue of the original game title comparing the first three years of each. Wild Hunt then generated a whopping eleven times the revenue of the second game in even less time. Taking into account the additional revenue generated from its DLC content, Wild Hunt has now generated fifteen times the revenue of its predecessor.

Clearly, the series exploded in popularity after the release of the third game, which has become almost universally recognized as one of the games of the generation.

The financial results also included a breakdown of which platforms The Witcher 3 sold best on. The breakdown during its first year on the market is as follows:

  • PS4 – 48%
  • Xbox One – 20%
  • PC – 31%

In the years since, however, the PC has become the dominant platform, comprising 50% of copies sold in 2017.

Elsewhere, CD Projekt Red recently opened a new studio in Wrocław to assist with the development of its highly anticipated upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077.
