The Deus Ex series first launches back in the year 2000 and has since become a big name in the gaming world. A direct sequel was released in 2003 and two prequel games, Human Revolution and Mankind Divided were published by Square Enix back in 2011 and 2016 respectively.
The series’ most recent outing, Mankind Divided, didn’t do quite as well as expected and suffered from numerous controversies prior to its release such as offering a number of tiered rewards based on how many people pre-ordered the game, the inclusion of microtransactions, and referencing the Black Lives Matter movement in the game’s marketing by using the tagline ‘Aug Lives Matter.’
It has been suggested that the Deus Ex franchise has since been put on the back burner for now and it is indeed true that no future Deus Ex games have been announced. However, in an interview with GamesIndustry, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda stated that Deus Ex is an important franchise to the company and that it’s a lack of resources that prevents a new game from being developed.
“What I can say is Eidos Montreal has always developed Deus Ex, and the issue is we do not have limitless resources. We have several big titles that we work with and that’s partly a factor in what our line-up looks like. Of course, it would be ideal if we could work on all of them all of the time, but the fact of the matter is some titles have to wait their turn. The reason there isn’t a Deus Ex right now is just a product of our development line-up because there are other titles we are working on.”
It seems Square Enix has not ruled out the possibility of the franchise returning. Here’s hoping we see Deus Ex in the near future.
