Mike Laidlaw, the Dragon Age series’ senior creative director and a contributor on the Mass Effect franchise, has left developer BioWare after nearly 15 years.
“In my time at BioWare I have been lucky to work with some of the most talented and hardworking people in the industry,” Laidlaw tweeted yesterday evening. “It’s been an honor to be a part of the Dragon Age team, and I have every confidence that the world we’ve created together is in good hands and I’m excited for the road ahead.”
Laidlaw offered no hints about where he might next find employment. Instead, he said he’d spend some time “reconnecting with all the amazing games and worlds” he’s missed out on from other developers while busy creating his own worlds at BioWare.
After joining BioWare in February 2003, Laidlaw worked as Jade Empire’s lead writer and Dragon Age’s lead designer before becoming the latter series’ creative director in 2009 and its senior creative director this past June.
Though BioWare has not officially announced a fourth Dragon Age game, one of the series’ producers teased as much last year. Laidlaw himself alluded to Jade Empire 2 being a possibility in June, but he noted at the time that Dragon Age comes first. BioWare has made no mention of picking up the Jade Empire series. It has been more than 12 years since Jade Empire’s first and only game released.
BioWare lost another key member of the Dragon Age team in January 2016 when David Gaider moved on after 17 years at the studio.
