Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris Reveal
The 5 Biggest Announcements from Sony’s Paris Games Week 2017 Conference
Less than two months after Destiny 2’s hugely successful launch, Sony’s Paris Games Week conference showcased the first official look at its expansion, Curse of Osiris. The name will have a familiar ring to those that played the Crucible event, Trials of Osiris, from the original game. For those not in the know, Osiris is a Warlock formerly of the Vanguard who was driven to insanity by an obsession to learn more about the nature of the Darkness. Destiny lore has long hinted at a more detailed exploration of Osiris’ backstory, and therefore fans have expected him to take center stage in a campaign for some time. A leak via the Xbox Store also pointed toward that being the case, and now we have our confirmation.
The expansion will arrive on all platforms Dec. 5, focusing on a Vex invasion of Mercury, with players encountering the Warlock, Osiris. Along with new story missions, it’s fair to presume that the expansion will feature new loot, activities, a new planet to explore, as well as likely boosting the level cap.
Shadow of the Colossus Looks Gorgeous, and it has a Release Date
The 5 Biggest Announcements from Sony’s Paris Games Week 2017 Conference
Shadow of the Colossus Remake was absolutely one of E3 2017’s big surprises. The reception to a graphically enhanced and presumably modernized (with respect to controls) version of Shadow of the Colossus has been met with triumphant cheers of excitement. And as this latest trailer demonstrated, with pretty good reason, too: Ueda’s masterpiece looks utterly gorgeous and even more awe-inspiring running on PS4. More than ever, PlayStation fans will be desperate to get their hands on a copy. Luckily, as it turns out, we won’t have long to wait, because although a release date for the game didn’t pop during the on-stage trailer, it was later confirmed that Shadow of the Colossus Remake is inbound early next year, Feb. 6.
In other related news, PS4 Pro owners will also have the option to play the game at either 30 frames-per-second in 4K resolution or 60 in 1080p. Considering the original game struggled to maintain 30 frames-per-second running in standard definition, that’s likely to prove a pretty big upgrade.
Detroit: Become Human Confirmed for Spring
The 5 Biggest Announcements from Sony’s Paris Games Week 2017 Conference
Developer David Cage’s upcoming cinematic story-driven adventure game has captivated Sony audiences at several conferences gone-by. In fact, even before the game’s inception, the PS3 technology demonstration from which it was derived, Kara, fascinated crowds with its frightening and emotional android-with-a-soul narrative.
Years later, having now seen two E3’s showcasing substantial gameplay reveals, PlayStation fans are anxious to finally play Quantic Dreams’ brilliant-looking new game. Paris Games Week demonstrated more of the same intriguing choice-and-consequence branching narrative, and surely some of the best visuals we’ve ever seen on console. But most importantly, we’re finally out of the dark with respect to when we can expect to see the game. While a firm release date wasn’t disclosed, Sony did at least pledge a Spring 2018 launch window.
The Last of Us Part II’s Brutal New Trailer
The 5 Biggest Announcements from Sony’s Paris Games Week 2017 Conference
Not for the squeamish, Naughty Dog’s shockingly brutal cinematic story trailer for The Last of Us Part II was another glorious tone piece that has surely sent fans into a fever pitch of excitement. As was the original reveal back at E3, the setting, characters, and nature of the story remain vague and mysterious. We don’t really know what we’re seeing, but we do know that it looks utterly gorgeous and tees up some wonderful possibilities with respect to the potential direction of the game’s story.
Whatever shape the story takes, Naughty Dog’s latest title is certainly looking promising. The real question is whether we’re likely to see gameplay anytime soon and how far The Last of Us II is from store shelves.
Ghost of Tsushima Reveal
The 5 Biggest Announcements from Sony’s Paris Games Week 2017 Conference
It’s been four years since Sucker Punch’s last game, Infamous: Second Son, and nearly a decade since the developer debuted a new IP. Sony’s Paris Games Week conference opened with the spectacular reveal of this latest project, Ghost of Tsushima, an open-world Samurai-themed exclusive for PS4. The trailer-reveal showcased what would appear to be a game set in the era of the Mongol invasion of Japan, with players taking control of a lone Samurai protagonist vowed to stop it. The trailer suggests the game will feature melee and ranged combat, but that’s about all we have so far.
Based on Sucker Punch’s track record with open-world superhero games that focus on traversal and special abilities, we’re fascinated to see how that transfers to a Samurai game in a more grounded and realistic setting. The first two Infamous games, in particular, were also exceptionally well-written, which inspires confidence that Ghost of Tsushima’s narrative is also likely to be a standout feature.
