Nintendo has just shared a new video about the developer diary of their upcoming 3DS game, Metroid: Samus Returns. The video features Nintendo EPD’s Executive Officer, Yoshio Sakamoto, who shares more information on Samus’ latest adventure.

The six and a half minute clip starts off by sharing that it has been 13 years since Nintendo has released a 2D Metroid game. That said title was Metroid: Zero Mission which was launched way back on the Game Boy Advance.

Sakamoto then went on to explain that Metroid: Samus Returns is structured around Metroid II which was released 25 years ago on the Game Boy. However, he considers this installment to be a new game altogether as they have revamped the gameplay for a more streamlined experience.

The series fundamentals are still in place since players will still be busy exploring various stages and collecting power-ups along the way. However, Metroid: Samus Returns includes free aiming for precision shots as the original game only allowed players to fire in eight directions. Similarly, Samus has also gotten a defensive move called the Melee Counter that can stun foes just as they are about to strike her. If successful, she can follow up with her own attacks to decimate the enemy.

Aside from some of the new tech Samus can find, the game also introduces Aeion abilities. Samus can find special energy called Aeion that can temporarily power up some of her abilities. With this boost of power, she can fire off a machine gun barrage of shots from her weapon or surround herself with lightning which negates damage and deflects enemies. These Aeion abilities will not only give Samus an edge during combat but also give returning fans some new ways to play 2D sidescroller.

Metroid: Samus Returns is slated to release on the 3DS this Sept. 15.
