Jeff Kaplan Promises More Overwatch Animated Shorts Are on the Way

Not a movie... but it's the next best thing

There has been an influx of exciting news for Overwatch fans leading up to the game’s first anniversary. Blizzard has been busy teasing new skins, maps and emotes. Players know to expect a special game mode to be added to the arcade in honor of the big day. Even a special livestream will help usher in the second year of Overwatch as the game continues to captivate gamers everywhere. But before there was an official Overwatch eSports league and before there was even an Overwatch game that players could get their hands on, there was first an impressive collection of Overwatch shorts.

Before the game even hit shelves, many gamers already fell in love with the likes of Tracer and Soldier: 76 already emerged as an interesting hero. Before anyone knew the gameplay would be fantastic and the maps would provide so much beauty and sheer detail that they looked like they were ripped out of Pixar movies, we knew the Overwatch shorts were downright amazing. The sad news is that since Sombra’s reveal, we haven’t seen any other shorts released from the Overwatch team. According to game director Jeff Kaplan, however, that’s about to change.

During a recent press event in New York City, Kaplan explained that more animated shorts will be arriving soon. “The animated shorts are probably the thing that we have the most fun making,” Kaplan explained. “We really love working with our animation group and digging out the stories not tied to any constraints of gameplay – we can tell any stories we want…We plan to tell more of those. We’re hard at work on more of those.”

The news is exciting for Overwatch fans and it was probably particularly thrilling news for lead writer Mitchell Chu who recently shared that he hopes to create shorts for every character in the game. At the time, however, there is no exact timeline or slated release date for when the next animated shorts will arrive but they are sure to take over the Internet when they do.

Kaplan also explained that the shorts are being thought of as seasons and while the team is hoping to add more content to a second season, that season has technically already begun. According to Kaplan, the first season of animated shorts ends with The Last Bastion, which suggests that Sombra’s short was actually the beginning of season 2.

One can only hope that more information about upcoming animated shorts will be shared during Blizzard’s 10-hour livestream celebration for the Overwatch anniversary.
