walking dead: a new frontier

Please note there are major story spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead: A New Frontier Episode Three. If you want to experience the episode as it was intended, we advise you turn back now. Also, note that this story summary is based on the major decisions we made during the episode. We’ve highlighted these whenever they appeared in the story.

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier episode three kicks off with chapter one taking us back into the past once more. We rejoin the action with Javi and Kate searching for a propane tank in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, when they get to it, it’s empty. Kate, frustrated, throws it to the ground, before apologizing to Javi for making a noise and overreacting. As the two sit on the ground, silently in contemplation of what to do next, a young walker ambushes Javi through the door behind him. He tosses it to the ground and smashes its head repeatedly into the floor until it’s no longer moving. Despite asking for Kate’s hammer in the struggle with the Walker, she seemed to freeze up, recognizing the boy. It turns out that it was one of Gabe’s friends, Drew.

After talking with Kate about how to deal with Walkers she recognizes, the player has an option to bond with Kate in a major decision. Here, you can either tell her you’re together and that’s all that matters, or just tell her you need to get back to the house.

Regardless of which you pick, you’ll eventually make your way back to the house to a sleeping Gabe and Mariana. Kate and Javi discuss whether or not they should stay at the house or go. Kate talks him into going because it’s safer. No place is safe, so they’re better on the move. Gabe awakens and refuses to leave. He asks what happens if his dad returns and they’re all gone. The conversation leads to him saying he’ll stay and if he needs help he’ll just ask his friends. Unfortunately, this leads Kate and Javi into telling him that you just mashed his good friend Drew’s head into the pavement.

With Gabe convinced, you decide that you’re going to set off first thing in the morning, but Gabe wants to leave his father a note. Exactly what it says is down to you, but Mariana will help him write the letter. Gabe pins it to the wall before the group set off on the road.

The action then returns to the present day with the group meeting David for the first time. Gabe immediately runs to hug his father, while David inquires what happened to Kate. Javi tells David she needs a doctor right away, and David agrees, thanking Javi for getting her here in the process. Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to all walk freely into town with her. First, the group is sent to the quarantine area to be checked over by the doctor and to answer a few questions. Your trip here reunites the group with Eleanor who has been worried this whole time about Kate. She tells the group she had no reason not to trust these guys, but is eventually told by Tripp that this is the New Frontier and David is Javi’s brother. Oh, and he also lets slip that Kate is actually David’s wife, and is not officially romantically connected to Javi.

Tripp then begins to come up with a theory that David planned to have Mariana and Kate short, or at least sent his men after them. Clementine doesn’t do us any favors here, either, confessing that she knows David and “he’s not a good guy.” You’ll then need to make a decision on what the group should do. We told them to just go along with the New Frontier’s demands and way of life for now, and just as we finished, David enters the quarantine zone. He tells Javi that Kate is asking for him, but none of the others are able to go with you. As you make your way out of the room, Clementine stares down David as the two brothers walk off.

Chapter Two

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier Episode Three

walking dead: a new frontier

As Javi and David wander the streets, David confronts you about the “go along with them for now” that he overheard Javi telling the rest of the group. He tells Javi that they’ve got their own methods and ways of doing things here and that’s not going to change because of your group.

He’ll then ask Javi if what Gabe has been telling him is true, but you won’t know exactly what he’s talking about. As the player, you’ll have to guess what he’s eluding to, or call Gabe out for being a blabbermouth. David will then tell you he was talking about Mariana’s unfortunate death. He asks about how it happened and what she was like as a young girl. You can choose to tell him these details as you wish, but he’ll ask Javi who it was that killed her. Javi tells him it was a member of the New Frontier, and that Max, the guy currently on the gate, was there. David storms away and says he’ll handle things but tells Javi to keep out of it as the politics in Richmond are messy. He’s just one of four leaders here (the head of security), so he’ll need to talk things through with the others.

Javi is then quickly introduced to David’s right-hand woman, Ava. Though nothing really happens in the conversation, she’s definitely going to be an interesting character.

As Javi enters the medical bay where Kate is, you find Gabe is inside with her already. Kate is awake and okay and David makes a comment about how beautiful his wife is, just before she starts writhing in pain. David runs out to the get the doctor, but Kate was just putting it on so she could talk to Javi alone. She’s scared more than she ever was on the road, and confides in you, telling you it’s always been the two of you and that’s what has gotten you so far. She’ll ask you to promise not to leave her alone for too long.

David quickly returns with the doctor who is incredibly impressed by the work that Eleanor did on Kate. The doctor says he’ll vouch to have Eleanor taken out of quarantine and put to work. David then says the two of you have to meet some people, and bids farewell to Kate. The doctor says he won’t be able to make it and to send his apologies, but tells David that his vote is with him. Looks like we’re about to see the higher-ups of this settlement.

Javi is then taken to an old church where two people are already talking. Clin, who runs food production, and Joan, who is the bridge to the outside world and handles contact with outside settlements. After a bit of small talk over food, Javi is told that Joan, Clint, David, and the doctor make all the decisions in the settlement, and that the New Frontier mark was a sign of trust and a crude solution to the betrayal problem they faced in the past.

Max, the guy Javi had some altercations with in previous episodes is then brought in. Clint sent for him after hearing you two had exchanged bullets before. We chose to say you have no problems with him, and Max said the same thing back. You can choose to say you’re not friends or that you can’t stand him, but remember you may not want to upset these people in the long run. Joan says she doesn’t buy it and then starts pushing Max for information on what really happened. He spills the beans on the entire event. He tells them of the siphoning of the gas, the murdering of his friend Rufus, all when they would have offered to help Javi had he just asked. This isn’t looking good for your time in Richmond.

You’ll then be given the option to tell them that Badger killed Mariana, or to just let it slide. We opted to tell them and David told Javi to sit down, but Joan pressed him to continue. You can continue to tell them the information of how they ambushed Prescott. Joan tells David she warned him of getting his soldiers in line. She then orders Javi and the rest of his group to be sent outside of the gates with enough weapons to keep themselves alive but nothing more. She wants nothing to do with them after the events that have just been told.

David tells you that Kate, Gabe, and Eleanor will be staying here, but to stay safe while he tries to smooth things over with Joan and Clint. Well, that was a short stay in Richmond!

Chapter Three

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier Episode Three

After being escorted out of the settlement, Ava quickly follows, throwing a duffle bag at Javi’s feet. She tells him that David packed it, but when Tripp starts getting aggravated and confronts her, she quickly socks him in the face, knocking him to the ground. Ava tells Javi of a settlement a few miles west the group should head toward, and to not return.

Upon opening the bag, Javi finds a map wrapped around a baseball bat. The map shows the New Frontier’s plans for expansion, and some areas are marked clear. There’s an area marked on it that Javi thinks David wants them to go. The bag also has a flashlight, a couple of meager weapons, and no food. Clementine tells Tripp to deal with it and everyone grabs one of the weapons. You’ll have a major decision to make at this point. Conrad will tell you to take the gun and apologizes for acting so weirdly in the tunnel over Clementine’s mark. You can either give him the gun or keep hold of it. We chose to give Conrad the gun.

On the way, Jesus hears something in the distance. A quarter mile out, Walkers are heading in the same direction as you. The group has their weapons at the ready, and soon enough they’re right in front of you. This is where you find out that Jesus is a complete badass when it comes to taking down Walkers, and after the majority of them are taken care of, everyone but Javi keeps making their way to the location on the map. Unfortunately, Javi gets overwhelmed by two remaining Walkers, but Clementine shows up just in the nick of time to grab the baseball bat off you and lay down some serious beatings. She tells Javi that they’re even now and then confides in him about not being able to trust David.

She said she didn’t want to rely on other people, but she had nowhere else to go. The New Frontier gave her the brand and made her one of them. They promised they’d help the baby, but apparently, that turned out to be a lie.

You’re then taken back to that fateful night. Clementine is looking for medicine and has to sneak through a New Frontier camp. After moving into cover, AJ starts crying. Clem calms him down and begins routing through the nearby medbox for the medication she needs, noting the sleeping doctor right behind her.

As Clementine preps the Vancomycin, the doctor wakes and tells her not to waste it on AJ as it won’t save him. He tells Clementine to put the drugs back before they find out. You’ll have the option to inject AJ anyway, or to put them back. We injected him and eventually, the New Frontier members at the campfire, including David, had surrounded Clementine.

David asks why the hell Clem did it when she was told that it wouldn’t work. Ava tells him to calm down as she’s just trying to help her kid. For “wasting” the Vancomycin, Clementine is banished from the New Frontier, but AJ is snatched from her before she’s forced out. You’ll be given the choice to properly say goodbye to AJ or spit in David’s face. We opted for the former

Chapter Four

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier Episode Three

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, review, episode three

Eventually, the group finally makes it to an old warehouse surrounded by Walkers. This must have been what David had circled on the map. The group beats its way past a few Walkers standing in their way, evading the others and making it inside the gates. Walkers start pressing up against the fence, and in the nick of time, Javi is able to use a jack currently being used on a wrecked card to lift the warehouse door and get everyone inside. Conrad manages to make his way inside with the help of the pistol you let him keep. Javi kicks the jack out of the door to shut the group safely inside.

Just as you begin to calm down, you hear banging on the door; David is outside. Clem fires a shot just by Javi’s head and warns him not to let him in. You’ll have a major decision to make here – make Javi back away or let David in. We chose to let David in and luckily, Jesus snatches the pistol out of Clem’s hands anyway.

With David inside, a small talk between himself and Clementine reveals that AJ is, in fact, not dead. At least, that’s what David says. Apparently, he bounced back and was far stronger than they thought. Clem says he’s lying and asks where he is. David tells her the doctor will know where but he is unsure, and she vows to return to Richmond to find AJ.

With that out of the way, David tells you here’s come to set Javi and the group up with some provisions before saying goodbye. David says he’s back and he’ll take care of his family now. Just as this begins to turn into an argument, two Walkers burst through the door and the two brothers use a nearby crate to barricade it. Tripp is immediately intrigued by the crate, asking where you found it. It turns out the warehouse is filled with stuff from Prescott and other settlements. He suspects David has something to do with it, but he denies it.

As Jesus tries to piece it all together, voices can be heard as three others enter the warehouse. The group hides to find Max and a group of other soldiers from Richmond dumping some bags in the warehouse. Javi creeps up on them and disarms one of the guys. Max tries to talk David down, before pulling out his pistol and firing off some shots. Max makes a break for it, so David takes care of him, while Javi heads after Badger also trying to make his escape.

After an intense battle with Badger in the upstairs office, Javi finds himself defenseless on the floor with Badger about to deliver a finishing blow. He manages to evade it, grabbing the shotgun Badger was earlier loading and fires it into his body. Badger is pretty much dead. Javi will be preparing to swing to finish him off, as Conrad and Tripp make their way in. Conrad kicks him in the face for killing Francine. You’ll then have the option of letting him turn, killing him yourself, or letting Conrad do it. We chose to do it ourselves, which saw Javi take numerous heavy hits at Badger’s head with the bat.

After pulling yourself away from beating Badger’s head in with the bat, the three hear some noise from outside. David and Max are battling it out, and finally David manages to disarm him. Max tells you he was going about looting and attacking other survivors under Joan’s orders. She said they needed it all to survive, but wouldn’t let them tell David because she didn’t want him to know. You’ll then have the option to kill Max or let him return with you. We chose to keep him alive.

Chapter Five

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier Episode Three

walking dead: a new frontier

Outside of the warehouse with the battle over, the group realizes Lonnie managed to give them the slip and make it back to Richmond. Jesus then tells you he’s leaving to let his people know what’s going on. He goes on his own and departs from the group into the woods. David tells Javi that he needs to return to Richmond fast, and the group makes its way back after Javi agrees to support him.

With the help of Badger’s truck and a secret passage into the heart of Richmond, David sneaks the group back into the settlement. Tripp and Conrad decide to go after Eleanor, Javi makes his way to get Kate and Gabe, Clem goes after AJ, and David is going to pay Joan a visit. They agree to meet back up at David’s house (the one with the bird outside). With the plan in motion, they all split up.

As Javi, Tripp, and Conrad all make their way to the medical center, two Richmond armed soldiers stand guard and can be heard talking about how they’re searching for Javi. Tripp tosses Javi a nearby rock and tells him to make a distraction. Javi throws it at a nearby transformer, sending the two guards running off in search of firemen to avoid the whole block from catching fire.

Upon being reunited with Kate and Gabe, Javi is told by Kate that she was visited by a woman called Joan who said David is no longer in control. Javi can tell them that the people that shot Kate were following her orders and that she’s a real piece of work. Javi tells them the plan to meet up with David and prepare to depart.

Kate has other plans, though. With Tripp, Carmine, and Eleanor now in the room, she refuses to go to David’s house and tells everyone they should just leave Richmond and let them fight among themselves. Gabe disagrees, though. He refuses to leave his father once again, especially when he could be in danger. You’ll have to make the decision with what you want Javi and the group to do. We chose to stick with David.

Eleanor runs out to grab a gun that she was given as it could come in handy. Kate tries to leave the room and falls to the floor. Javi offers his hand, but Kate refuses to accept it. As Javi, Kate, and Gabe arrive at David’s house, Ava is waiting outside and tells them he’s in trouble. Javi leaves with Ava to help David, leaving Kate and Gabe in the safety of David’s house.

Chapter Six

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier Episode Three

the walking dead: a new frontier, episode three

Javi enters the church where David and Joan are arguing. Joan is displeased that he sneaked Javi in, but you can interrupt and tell her that they’re onto her plans, revealing her secrets. She’ll try and talk her way out of it, but Javi and David will use Max (if you kept him alive) who’ll recount her orders.

Admitting defeat, Joan says she did it to ensure the survival of those living in Richmond. She appeals to Clint and the doctor, stating that without doing this, they wouldn’t have had the fertilizer and pills they so desperately needed.

Javi can say she’s delusional and that the cost is not worth the reward. She apologizes for Mariana, and that it’s something she’ll have to live with. She orders guards to take both Javi and David away and put them in a cell until she knows what to do with them. Clint and Paul don’t stand up for David, and instead, tell him that he’s got no power here anymore. Javi gets knocked out by the end of a guard’s rifle and that marks the end of the episode.
