Fallout 4 was the highly anticipated sequel to one of Bethesda’s most popular franchises. The game was hotly rumored for years but it was finally confirmed at E3 2015. Not only did Bethesda reveal the game was in development, but it was very nearly finished. Released in late 2015, just a few months after it was announced, the game was a huge hit and came to rival even Bethesda’s other popular game, Skyrim.
It has now been revealed that Fallout 4 has indeed surpassed Skyrim and is now Bethesda’s best-selling game of all time. That’s seriously impressive when you consider how popular Skyrim was and the fact it has been out for years longer.
Appearing on the Kinda Funny Gamecast, Bethesda’s marketing executive Pete Hines said “Fallout 4 has gotta be the most successful game we’ve ever launched in our company’s history. More than Skyrim, in terms of what we did.”
As GameSpot reports, Skyrim originally launched in late 2011 and, as of 2014, has sold 20 million copies, though it has no doubt sold a lot more since then. Fallout 4 came out in 2015 and the last figure given for the titles was that on launch day it sold 12 million copies.
At first it wasn’t exactly clear when Hines stated the title was Bethesda’s “most successful game” but he soon clarified on Twitter. A fan asked how exactly Hines was comparing them and expressed disbelief that Fallout 4 could already have outsold Skyrim. Hines then explained that he’s comparing them by looking at their figures “over the same time period” and that Fallout 4 has indeed outsold Skyrim.
i'm comparing them over the same period of time. and yes.

It was well known that Fallout 4 did very well upon release but this is surprising news, especially given that Skyrim was also very popular and has almost a four year head start on Fallout 4. No doubt Bethesda is very proud.
