Microsoft may be planning to release what it calls the most powerful games console ever later this year, but until Xbox Scorpio arrives, Sony’s PlayStation 4 will continue to enjoy the same graphical power advantage over Xbox One that it has since the two consoles launched in 2013.
This power gap has resulted in a number of multiplatform games looking better on Sony’s console than Microsoft’s, and it sounds like BioWare’s Mass Effect Andromeda will continue that trend.
“As Mark Cerny from Sony has shared, Mass Effect: Andromeda is running at 1800p with checkerboard rendering on PS4 Pro. Last I checked, we were like other Frostbite games on PS4 and XBox [sic] One – 1080p and 900p respectively,” BioWare General Manager Aaryn Flynn wrote on NeoGAF in response to a fan post alleging the game would run at just 720p on Xbox. “All are at 30 fps. PC has uncapped framerate. I think we’ve even gotten over the 30 fps cap in cutscenes, but I’ll double-check in the next couple of weeks.”
So while owners of both consoles will have framerate parity with Mass Effect Andromeda, PlayStation 4 owners will get a higher resolution unless something changes before development concludes. But with Andromeda releasing on March 21, the window of time for BioWare to find a way to squeeze more out of the Xbox One isn’t particularly wide.
