God of War Director Confirms Kratos’ Son’s Name

Hello, son.

Last June at E3, Sony revealed a new entry in the God of War franchise. Kratos had ditched his Blades of Chaos in favor of an axe, and with that came a young son and a Nordic setting. Fans have had many questions about the game, one of them being the name of that son. Earlier today, creative director Cory Balrog gave us his name: Atreus.

A fan on Twitter by the name of Fabiano Banin snagged the music from the God of War E3 footage (played live with an orchestra beforehand by the game’s composer, Bear McCreary) and discovered that the tag said “An introduction to Kratos and Atreus.” Banin confronted Balrog with the information, which the latter was happy to confirm.

In Greek mythology, Atreus was a king of Mycenae, and the father of Agememnon and Menelaus. Exiled along with his brother Thyestes by their father for killing their half-brother, they took refuge in Mycenae and eventually rose to power. The reasons for why Kratos named him this are unclear, but they’re likely to be revealed over the course of the story.

God of War and his son Atreus will arrive on the PS4 later this year.
