After the lackluster release of Suicide Squad earlier this year, director David Ayer is returning to the DC Expanded Universe to work on Gotham City Sirens.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ayer will be helming Gotham City Sirens, a film focusing on some of the female rogues from Gotham City. A comic bok series of the same name was released recently, featuring characters like Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy. Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn, which was a hit with fans and critics.

The film is still several years out, though. Ayer is still working on his Netflix exclusive film Bright, which stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. The screenplay is currently being written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who has also written the scripts for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot and the third film in the Sherlock Holmes series. The studio is also developing a sequel to Suicide Squad and looking into the possibility of a Deadshot spin-off, featuring Will Smith’s skilled assassin.

Batman and Gotham City are some of the most popular parts of the DC Universe. So it makes sense to capitalize on these parts, putting a focus on some of the more popular aspects of the DCEU, especially since the first several movies haven’t done as well as the studio hoped.
