The Minecraft 1.11 update (also named the Exploration Update) is bringing a ton of new changes to the game. There’s tons of tiny changes coming with the update, but a few major ones as well. We’ll break down everything you need to know first.

Illagers – This new mob is like a villager, but evil. There are two types, Vindicators and Evokers.

Vindicator – This hostile mob will attack players and villagers with their Iron Axe. They can be found in Woodland Mansions, and drop Emeralds or Iron Axes. They’re not a good way to farm Emerald, however, as they do not respawn inside mansions.

Evoker – This mob, also found in Woodland Mansions, casts spells and summons Vexes and Fangs in battle. They’re extremely tough, dealing 6 damage with their attacks, completely ignoring armor. They’ll attack players and villagers, and drop a Totem of Undying and sometimes Emeralds. Fun fact: they change nearby blue sheep into red sheep.

Vex – A vex is like a small, ghostly, evil fairy. They fly around attacking players and villagers with iron swords, and can only be found when they’re summoned by an Evoker.

Llamas – These spawn in herds in Savannah and Extreme Hills biomes. You can tame them, ride them, or lead them in caravans. They’re great for hauling around chests of loot, and can even be equipped with stylish carpets.

Minecraft 1.11 New Blocks

minecraft shulker 1.11 update

Shulker Box – This is a new sort of chest crafted using a regular chest and two Shulker Shells (placed above and below the chest). They’re pretty cool since they can be dyed different colors and come with a cool opening animation, but what’s really awesome about these is that they retain their contents when broken. So place a Shulker Box, fill it with junk, break it, and then pick up the resulting Shulker Box. It’ll only take one slot in your inventory, but still be carrying all of your stuff. When you place it again, you can access all of your goods normally.

Observer – These blocks are making their way to Minecraft 1.11, despite already existing in the Pocket and Windows 10 versions of the game. They create a redstone signal when an adjacent block is updated.

Minecraft 1.11 New Items

Spawn Eggs – We’re getting back a lot of the eggs that were taken out in previous updates (Donkey, Zombie Horse, Skeleton Horse, Wither Skeleton, Mule, Stray, Husk, and Elder Guardian), as well as four new spawn eggs (Vindicator, Evoker, Vex, and Llama).

Totem of Undying – Dropped from Evokers, these totems can save your life. If you die while holding one, you’ll be revived and granted Absorption II for 40 seconds and Regeneration II for 5 seconds. They’ll be destroyed upon use, too.

Shulker Shell – These drop from Shulkers and are used to make Shulker Boxes.

Exploration Map – Cartographer Villagers now sell maps that can pinpoint Woodland Mansions and Ocean Monuments

Minecraft 1.11 New Stuff In the World

Woodland Mansions – These large mansions generate in Roofed Forests. They contain an assortment of rooms, like dining rooms or rooms filled with chests. Some harbor giant chicken sculptures or strange fighting rings. You can check out some of the coolest Woodland Mansion seeds we’ve found so far here.

Return portals – In the End and near End Cities, you’ll now find portals that take you back to the base island’s spawn platform.

Minecraft 1.11 New Enchantments

Curse Enchantments – Now there are enchantments with negative effects. Items with these curses will be found as loot around the world.

Curse of Binding – This enchantment will make it so you cannot drop or remove the item unless you die.

Curse of Vanishing – This enchantments makes it so that if you die, all your items disappear permanently.

Minecraft 1.11 Miscellaneous Cool Things

Chat messages can now be 256 characters long (as opposed to the previous 100 character limit)

Shields now block 100% (up from 66%) of damage from melee attacks, making you immune to Creeper explosions, Burning Zombie fire, and Wither Skeleton wither effects.
