Pokemon Sun and Moon – Fishing Rod
The Fishing Rod makes an expected return to Pokemon Sun and Moon, and this item will allow players to fish in the sea to catch Water type Pokemon. First off, you can obtain the Fishing Rod only once you get to the second island, Akala. You’ll have to beat Lana, the Water type Trial Captain. After doing so, she’ll hand over the Fishing Rod.
Now, fishing works a little differently in Sun and Moon as you can’t just stand next to any body of water and throw out the Rod. You’ll have to look for specific spots in the water where you can see the surface bubbling slightly. When you’re near a fishing spot, the game will prompt you to press the A button to throw out the Rod. Some fishing spots can only be accessed when you’re swimming in the sea atop Lapras or Sharpedo, so be sure to explore as much as you can.
Watertype Pokemon can be caught with any Poke Ball, but I recommend bringing some Dive Balls with you, as these will improve the catch rate for Water-types.

A Bit on Fishing Rods
FIshing Rods have been a staple to the series ever since the original. Fishermen would be in abundance around bays and beaches catching whatever water Pokemon might bite. You always get one and can then follow suit. It’s a great way to fish for pocket monsters you normally wouldn’t catch. Water types, after all, are a bit hard to come by. You know, what with your character walking on land, and all. Typically, using the Surf ability on bodies of water would help you gather up even more of them and increase your odds of beating those pesky Fire and Rock types.
